Women's Softball - vs. Presentation College
Heise surpassses 1,000 career strikeouts in win

Senior pitcher Laura Heise struck out 12 batters in the opening game for the Saints today at the UMAC Crossover in Mankato, Minnesota, pushing her career total to 1,004.

She is only the fourth pitcher in NCAA Division-III history to surpass the 1,000 strikeout mark and is just 21 strikeouts behind the third place total that Laurie Machuga from Allegheny (Pa.) College accumulated from 1993-96. Kelly Schade (1996-99) from Simpson (Iowa) College is the D-III career leader with 1,121 strikeouts.

Heise (16-4) mowed down the first 12 batters Presentation sent to the plate in a 15-0 five-inning victory for St. Scholastica. Junior Rilee Dawson relieved Heise at the start of the fifth inning and the two Saints hurlers combined for a 1-hit shutout in the dominating win.

Four Saints hit homeruns in the contest, tying a St. Scholastica single-game record. Sisters Kristi and Missy Erickson both went yard for the Saints as did Erica Bond and Robin Lake. Lake and Missy Erickson cleared the fence for the first time this season while it was Kristy Erickson’s fourth and Bond’s third of the year.

In game two, the Saints defeated Martin Luther College 12-4. Freshman Amy Jansen picked up her fifth win of the season without a loss for the Saints. Jansen’s support at the plate came from teammates that pounded out 18 hits in the victory over the Knights.

Bond finished a perfect 6-for-6 at the plate for the day and raised her season average to .384, behind only Heise’s .472 average for the Saints.

The No. 16 Saints (23-7) lead the UMAC with a perfect 6-0 mark and are scheduled to play Minnesota-Morris and Bethany Lutheran College on Saturday to close out the first of two conference Crossover weekends.
