1. Reference Books
The Library has reference sources such as subject encyclopedias that provide basic, specific, authoritative information on health-related topics. These are all on the first floor and can only be used in the Library.

To search for reference books on your topic, use Reference Universe.

Here is just a sample: Encyclopedia of Public Health, Gale Encyclopedia of Medicine, Gale Encyclopedia of Nursing & Allied Health, Statistical Handbook on Infectious Diseases, Nutrition and Well-Being A to Z, The Encyclopedia of Nutrition and Good Health, and The New Harvard Guide to Women's Health

2. Books
Books provide in-depth coverage of a topic including its historical aspects, current situation, and future trends. While your assignment perhaps does not warrant reading entire books, chapters in books still offer a comprehensive look into your topic.

To search for books, use the Library's catalog ScholastiCAT.

Books on nursing will for the most part have the R Library of Congress call number. Sample subject headings to use to search for nursing books are: holistic nursing, nurse practitioners, minorities in nursing, nursing models, nursing--research

3. Articles
Journals, magazines, and newspapers all contain articles, but mostly for your assignments you will want research articles from peer-reviewed or scholarly journals. Articles offer current, very specific information on research findings. To find articles, you will need to use an online database; go to the Library's Find Articles page to select them.

These databases contain nursing and health-related articles: American Hospital Directory, CINAHL Plus with Full-Text, Cochrane, Health & Wellness Resource Center, Medline with Full-text, Proquest Medical Library, Proquest Nursing & Allied Health, PubMed, and SMART ImageBase.

There are tutorials to learn how to use these databases. To find the full-text of the article, use these full-text instructions.

The Library also subscribes to nursing and health specific journals such as Journal of Rural Health, Journal of School Health, Public Health Nursing, Cancer Nursing, Geriatric Nursing, and Nurse Practitioner. The most current issues are on the first floor with back issues kept on second floor. These can only be used in the Library. To find out what journals the Library has, use Find Print Journals and enter a journal name or select a topic such as nursing or health.

4. Websites
As the first three types of resources listed here all cost money, you will not be able to find them for free on the Internet. That being said, there still are useful websites such as government sites for statistics, organizational sites, and foundations. To help you find credible websites, the Librarians have created a list with links organized by topic - Subject Websites.

The Librarian Internet Index (www.lii.org) is also helpful to find websites you can trust.
