    Fiddlin’, poetry, geography and wild Alaskan adventures.  Get ready for national Poetry month with Ken Waldman, “Alaska’s Fiddling Poet”. Waldman and his band combine traditional Appalachian music, poems about old-time music and dance and vivid stories about his travels through Alaska, creating a unique, compelling show.  www.kenwaldman.com

    Mu Daiko, is a Japanese taiko drumming group known for energy, spirit, and artistry that has rocked its audiences for the past decade with the pounding rhythms, elegant choreography, and joyous energy that marks their signature work. “The sound is immense, building in intensity, filling the air with wave upon wave of pulsating rhythm. The drummers become the physical embodiment of the sound, using their entire bodies to create the sensation of a musical thunderstorm.” – Minnesota Women’s Press   www.muperformingarts.org

    Welcome spring with thoughts of birds and butterflies. Your yard can be a haven for birds and butterflies. Learn which plants are best for these winged creatures and how to design gardens that are good for wildlife and low maintenance for you. Pat Thomas is a wildlife gardener and founded the local chapter of the North American Butterfly Association.

    Explore Alaska, New Zealand and East Africa, then move to your own backyard and the wonderful world of bats. For your soul, learn about the history of the mountain dulcimer. These sessions will be taught by Wendy Grethen, instructor of travel, nature and music.

    This local history course examines the events and pioneers that shaped settlement at the head of Lake Superior. The 1850’s were an exciting time for a young United States. Emigration was doubling our population and war had made us a coast to coast republic. Technology was modifying the productivity of our economy and even religion was changing.

    Learn the names of all the presidents and the dates they served.  Through film, lecture and discussion we will reflect on the presidents' accomplishments and disappointments.  Participants will be encouraged to share information.

    The Golden Age of American Poetry: Transcendentals, Romantics, & Individualists
     Experience the greatest hits of nineteenth-century American poetry with both beloved classics and obscure-but-charming gems.  Participants in this discussion-based course will examine the culture, history, and thought of a period that was so vital and dynamic that it was labeled “the American Renaissance.” Come ready to share in the adventure and dig for buried treasure in works by Emerson, Longfellow, Poe, Whitman, Dickinson, Piatt, and others.
