Introduction

The goal of print metering is:

  • to become more environmentally responsible.
  • to reduce excessive paper waste.
  • to fairly allocate costs to those who use the printers.

By reducing printing and fairly allocating costs, the print metering system will be consistent with the College's Mission which calls for students, faculty, and staff to be accountable to both self and society.

Number of Free Pages and Costs Thereafter

To determine a fair fee for printing, the IT department considered other institution's policies as well as historical costs associated with printing at St. Scholastica.

200 free pages per semester are provided, plus 50 additional free pages to cover any printing problems such as jams, toner problems, or other unforeseen errors. After the 250 allotted free pages per semester have been used, there will be a charge of three cents per page.

Below is a break down of the cost:

Number of Pages PrintedCost $0.03 per page
Up to 250Free
300$1.50
350$3.00
450$6.00
550$9.00
650$12.00
750$15.00
850$18.00
950$21.00
1050$24.00
1150$27.00
1250$30.00

Students who exceed 250 printouts will be charged the appropriate amount. This charge will be made directly to their student account.

Faculty and Staff who exceed 250 printouts on the computer lab printers will be charged the appropriate amount on their departmental account.

Each semester, the free allotment of printing will be reset to 250 pages.

Checking Print Status

A web page has been set up for students to check their printing status. It is located at http://www2.css.edu/app/printmetering/. The student will submit their username on the web page and an e-mail will be sent to them within a few minutes outlining the number of pages they have printed so far this semester on the computer lab printers.

Students should call the Help Desk at x5911, if they want more printing information. Faculty and Staff should contact the Help Desk to receive information on their print usage in the computer labs.

Tips to Help Reduce Printing

For tips, click here.

Duplexing

Information Technologies installed duplexing printers in the computer labs so people are able to print on both sides of a piece of paper. Printing on both sides of a page will only be charged as one page.

To change your printing options to duplex:

  1. Go to File, Print...
  2. Make sure that the computer is pointing to the printer labeled HP LaserJet 4000 Series PCL.
  3. Click on the Properties button next to the printer name.
  4. Under Layout, choose an option under Print on Both Sides(Duplex).
  5. Click OK.
  6. Click OK again to print.
Color Printing

Faculty and Staff college-related color print jobs should be printed at the Copy Center, which is located in the receiving area of the Tower building (T2634). For Faculty and Staff, this will be charged directly to their department account and the department will be billed monthly.

Students should continue to use the color printer in the computers lab at a cost of $.50 per color print. These color prints will be billed to your student account. There are no free pages associated with color printing.

Other Items People Should Know...

Print metering affects everyone, including Duluth ADEP students, who prints to any computer lab laser printer on the Duluth campus. At this time, Twin Cities and Brainerd ADEP locations are not able to participate in print metering.

All summer accounts created for individuals or groups will also be subjected to a limit of 250 free printouts in the computer labs. The charge of three cents for each page over 250 will go to the department hosting the group. Status of the summer groups' accounts can be checked by visiting http://www2.css.edu/app/printmetering/ and entering the group account name. Departments will need to call the Help Desk to request a computer account for a summer group. Accounts can be set up so groups are unable to print. Accounts can also be disabled at any time, by calling the Help Desk, if student groups are abusing their printing privileges.

Remember to shut down or restart any lab computer you may have used. If you do not properly shut down your computer, you are still logged in that computer. This is a security risk. It also means that anyone could potentially print from your account. You will be charged for those pages if this should occur.
