An Interdisciplinary Major

Students in this major will gain a basic business foundation and find out what it takes to work in the dynamic, fast-paced world of Advertising and Public Relations. This interdisciplinary field emphasizes the strong writing and communication skills necessary to be successful in business. Students will be able to design appropriate messages for specific business audiences using a number of media, including print, electronic, digital and video.

Students are prepared to work in the real world of Advertising and Public Relations by various offerings in the Communication Department. The Management Department offers courses which will help prepare the student for business management in large or small corporate settings.

Two Options

All Advertising and Public Relations majors complete the same basic core of courses, which are offered in the Communication and Management departments. Then, students chose one of two concentrations, either written and oral communication or production and design.

The written/oral concentration prepares students to write grants and copy and present projects orally. Journalism skills are also introduced in this concentration.

The production/design concentration prepares a student to use a variety of visual media, such as photographic or computer generated images, for advertisements and other visual media.

Internship Requirement

Majors must complete an internship of four to sixteen credits (which is the equivalent of a full semester of academic credit). The internship may be completed all at once at one location, or be taken in four credit units in up to four different locations and spread throughout the junior and senior years.

An internship can be an invaluable tool in getting a job after college. In addition to learning career specific skills, it can help a student to develop a portfolio that includes experience outside of formal college classes.
