Technology Requirements

A portion of your coursework may include an online component. In order to be successful in this type of academic environment, students should be self-directed learners and comfortable using a computer. Feel free to take the Distance Learning Assessment to see if online learning would be a good fit for you.

Technology Skills

 If you want to brush up on certain skills, as a student of The College of St. Scholastica you can view tutorials on Microsoft Office products, Internet browsers, and more on the Atomic Learning website.


Many instructors use an online learning tool, Blackboard, in their courses. Program faculty and staff will provide instructions for using Blackboard. You will obtain general Blackboard information; FAQs; or complete a browser tune-up to test your system requirements. Visit the Academic Technology Center for more information about Blackboard and other online learning tools.

Computer recommendations

We highly recommend the use of a computer or laptop that meets the standards below. There is a possibility that other systems may perform adequately, but they are not supported by our technology support personnel. Tablets and Mobile devices may lack some essential functionalities. Scholastica will provide an email account that is accessible via the Internet.

Minimum recommended PC requirements

  • Operating system Windows 8 (minimum) or 10 (preferred)

Minimum recommended Mac requirements

  • MacOS Sierra 10.12 (minimum) or Catalina 10.15 (preferred)
  • If you need Windows on your Mac, you will need to look at a software solution such as VirtualBox or Parallels.

Internet Connection

  • Reliable Internet connection
  • Latest version of browser:


  • Word Processing Program (certain courses or degree programs may require specific processing program). College Provided Google drive can be used or current students can download Microsoft Office at
  • Adobe Acrobat Reader (latest version) - free download
  • Additional software as required by specific courses or degree programs

Some programs with synchronous components may require you to have the following:  

  • A computer with a USB-connected or built-in web cam
  • High speed Internet connection
  • Headset with microphone (USB connection recommended)
