Sometimes the most effective way to communicate visual information is to take a screenshot, or image of your computer screen. Screenshots are handy for a variety of purposes, such as supplementing written instructions for completing a task and showing an error or technical problem occurring on your computer.
Most computers have built-in methods for creating screenshots:
If you have Windows 7 or higher installed on your computer, you have access to the Snipping Tool that can be used to capture your computer screen.
Screencast-O-Matic is a screencasting (and webcam recording) tool that can be used directly from the website or downloaded and launched from your computer. With the free version of the software users can record up to 15 minutes per recording and have the ability to export files to YouTube and several video formats, such as MP4 and FLV. Premium access can be purchased as well. Premium access allows longer recording times, video editing tools, and more exporting and publishing options.
Camtasia™ is an advanced screencasting software with extensive options for editing, generating closed captions, and publishing your video. In addition to screen capture video, Camtasia can also be used to record PowerPoint based presentations. Due to the more sophisticated nature of Camtasia, use is fee-based and the time required to learn it is a bit longer than for free tools such as Screencast-O-Matic and Jing.
