Fue Yang Cottage Grove, MN Class of 2008 Psychology
Tell us about the work you do: I am studying for my master's in mental health counseling at Indiana State University and working as a graduate assistant for the McNair Scholars Achievement Program, mentoring undergraduate students. In the near future, I plan to pursue a Ph.D. in counseling psychology. A source of pride in your life: The greatest source of pride in my life are my parents and family. They are the reason I am pursuing higher education. I feel they have given me so much in my 23 years; education is something that I can give back to those who have been so loving and supportive. Best St. Scholastica memories: One of the best memories at St. Scholastica for me was a luncheon with the Sisters. This once-in-a-lifetime opportunity gave me an insight regarding the women who built our Benedictine school. If others are given the opportunity or invitation to dine with the Sisters, I would strongly encourage their accepting it. Significant influences: Significant influences in my life have been the McNair Scholars Program, the Psychology Department and Sister Edith Bogue. They have guided me through my undergraduate education and prepared me for graduate school. Without their meticulous support I could not have academically achieved such success during my time at St. Scholastica. Greatest professional achievement: An achievement of which I am very proud is the publication of my research paper. The paper required much of me, mentally and physically, and the finished product shows all the effort put into the research. A memorable and wonderful moment during college was being accepted to Indiana State University and receiving the graduate assistantship position. Something unusual about your life: Something interesting about me is that I was an uncle even before I was born. My oldest nephew is 28 years old and the youngest is 2 years old. Philosophy: I have always been intrigued by Tom Brokaw's quote about education. He states, "You are educated. Your certification is in your degree. You may think of it as the ticket to the good life. Let me ask you to think of it as an alternative. Think of it as your ticket to change the world." Impact of the Benedictine values: During my years at St. Scholastica, I never fully understood the meaning of Cor et Anima. It wasn't until my junior year that I finally understood the meaning: understanding what it means to become a part of the Benedictine community and the values and principles that define The College of St. Scholastica. I strive to uphold these values and principles in my life today. I hope and pray that you will soon find your Cor et Anima, as I have mine.
