What is UBMS?
The College of St. Scholastica's Upward Bound Math and Science (UBMS) has been successfully providing motivation and postsecondary prepatory support since 1995. The UBMS program works with 52 low-income, first-generation youth per year with the ability to achieve in math and science in northeastern Minnesota. Current UBMS students come from regional high schools such as AlBrook, Hermantown, Mesabi East, Two Harbors, Silver Bay, Willow River, Harbor City International School and Barnum.
The College of St. Scholastica's UBMS program is designed to provide the motivation and skill necessary to complete high school, enter a program of post-secondary education, and succeed in post-secondary education by earning a four-year degree. To accomplish this ambitious goal, students participate both during the academic school year and in a six-week summer program.
The UBMS program has been extremely successful. UBMS boasts a 93% retention rate of all high school students served. To date, 99% (97 of 98) of UBMS students have graduated from high school. CSS UBMS students go on to attend a wide variety of post-secondary institutions including St. Olaf College, the University of Minnesota (Twin Cities and Duluth), Hamline University, Moorhead State University, Bemidji State University, and The College of St. Scholastica.
The College of St. Scholastica is one of only 47 postsecondary institutions nationwide with at least five TRiO programs on campus. In addition to Upward Bound Math/Science, St. Scholastica's programs include Talent Search, Upward Bound, Student Support Services, and the McNair Scholars Program. Visit the federal TRIO program homepage at http://www.trioprograms.org/ for more information regarding these programs.
