2007 Leadership Finalist, Noelle F. Ekwochi
Major: Biochemistry
 






Academic Leadership Activities:

Neuroscience Research:
Noelle was one of twelve students selected to be in the neuroscience research program at the University of Minnesota. The first area of the program required participation in a three-week rigorous course in neurobiology.
        

Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program: 
Noelle used the program to explore graduate studies in comparison to medical school and also had an opportunity to conduct research. 
 

Academic Role Model: 
Noelle has been an academic role model her sophomore, junior and senior year.  
Ten students are chosen to act as liaisons between professors and students regarding academic issues.  

Anatomy/Physiology Teaching Assistant and Review Session Instructor 


Non-Academic Leadership Activities: 
 

Lowell Elementary School Volunteer: 
For the past three years, Noelle has volunteered in the special needs classroom.
 

Student Senate Financial Vice President: 
Noelle
was elected to the Student Senate in her freshman year and at the end of that year was appointed to serve as the Financial Vice President (FVP). 

Hurricane Katrina Relief Effort: 
Noelle traveled to Mississippi to help with the clean up and reconstruction in areas destroyed by Hurricane Katrina.  

Black History Month Co-Chair: 
As the chair, Noelle was responsible for coordinating the meetings that were necessary for organizing this week-long celebration.

Extreme Leadership Program: 
Sixteen students were selected to participate in this program designed to
develop leadership skills.

Board of Trustees Finance Committee Student Representative: 
Noelle served as the student representative
and a voting member on the Board of Trustees Finance Committee.  

After graduation in the fall of 2007, Noelle plans to attend medical school and to eventually specialize in radiology.  As of now, Noelle is planning to attend Creighton University School of Medicine, but she is also waiting to hear from other schools where she interviewed.

Julian Neira

Major:  Applied Economics
Minor: Mathematics

  • Participated in the Washington Semester Program, spring semester
  • Guest speaker in several classes to share his culture and the experience of being a   research fellow
  • Represented St. Scholastica in several national seminars and conferences

After graduation, Julian will begin a Ph.D. program in economics with an emphasis on environmental economics at the University of California, Santa Barbara.

After graduation, Wendy plans to volunteer as a St. Joseph Worker.  This program is run by the Sisters of St. Joseph and is focused on social justice and community leadership. After volunteering, Wendy plans to attend graduate school, possibly for a master’s in social work.

Residential Advisor

  • Sophomore year through senior year
  • Encourage respect for peers, faculty, staff and administrators
  • Facilitate hospitality through creating a welcoming atmosphere in our residence halls
  • Establish community by supportive actions and words
  • Promote stewardship through balance of mind, body and spirit
  • Integrate living and learning space to uphold our intellectual responsibility 

 Student Senate

  • External and Legislative Affairs Committee chair (sophomore)
  • Organized: Salvation Army bell ringing, Daffodil Days, Toys for Tots, food drives
  • Student Activities Committee chair (senior)
  • Promoted community involvement through student clubs, organized the annual Snowball, raised over $3000 for Relay for Life and the American Cancer Society, and monitor student club activities.

2007 Scholar-Athlete Awards

Scholar Athlete Awards
Jessica Stenberg and Dustin Palm received The College
of St. Scholastica’s first Scholar-Athlete Awards.

Jessica Stenberg

Jessica Stenberg graduated from St. Scholastica in May with a bachelor’s degree in health sciences. She is currently enrolled in the Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program at St. Scholastica.  In her first year of the DPT program, Stenberg earned a 3.66 GPA. She also received an Academic Departmental Award from the Department of Physical Therapy.

Stenberg played basketball at St. Scholastica for four years. She played in every game, was the team’s Rookie of the Year as a freshman, received the Coaches’ Blue Gold Award following the 2003-04 season, earned UMAC Academic All-Conference recognition in 2007, and served as team captain her senior year.

Dustin Palm graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry. He was on the Dean's List every semester and achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.97.  Palm also received an Academic Departmental Award from the Chemistry Department

He has been accepted in the Integrated Biosciences Graduate Program at the University of Minnesota Duluth. Known as "Doctor" by his teammates, Palm plans to attend medical school at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities.

Palm played soccer at St. Scholastica for four years and was named to the All-UMAC First Team in 2005. In 2006, he played in all 26 games and received the conference tournament MVP award as well as St. Scholastica’s MVP award. He received the UMAC Academic All-Conference award in 2004, 2005, and 2006 and received the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Scholar-Athlete Award in 2005.
