Health Insurance & Health Services

Please read the following information completely and carefully. It is critical that you understand this information as Health Care and Health Insurance may be very different in the United States than in your country. Failure to read and understand this information may lead to unnecessary expenses and/or misunderstandings regarding your responsibilities while a student at The College of St. Scholastica.

Health Insurance in the United States is privatized, that means in order to go to the doctor you need to pay for health insurance to cover the costs of a doctor or hospital visit.

1. ALL International Students are required to have Health Insurance that covers accident and illness while studying in the US. In addition you may wish to buy travel insurance to cover you while you travel to and from the college since most insurance will not cover you for travel. Travel insurance will also cover lost or damaged baggage and some other items

2. You must enroll in a College of St. Scholastica's endorsed policy by the beginning of each school year.

All international students are required to enroll in either Study USA-Health Care Insurance OR The College of St. Scholastica's Student Health Insurance. The Study-USA Health Plan's premium rates start at $493 for 12 months. The College of St. Scholastica's Health Insurance premium rate is $1020 for 12 months. (There are some differences in the two plans. Attached is an outline detailing some of those differences).

If you wish to enroll in the Study USA plan, you can view complete details at the Study USA Health Care Insurance Web site. If you wish to enroll in the College of St. Scholastica Plan, contact Deb Olson in the College of St. Scholastica Business Office).

Important: The College of St. Scholastica requires enrollment in one of these two plans for a 12 month period of time. Your enrollment period will be from Sept 2nd through September 1st. The charges for the insurance will be billed to your student account in two increments split between fall and spring semesters.

Further questions or inquiries contact  Tad Sears

Note: Some students may be eligible to waive the College Health Insurance. If you have questions about this, please contact The Office of International Student Services.

3. If you are eligible to waive the College Health Insurance, then your insurance plan is required to meet certain minimum standards. If you are in a College sport then you need to have extra insurance coverage. The athletic coaches will talk to athletes about this issue.

4. The College Health Insurance coverage is not comprehensive. The College has looked into other insurance options, but they were more expensive. The main purpose of the insurance is to deal with injury, illness, and emergencies.

5. If you are taking a prescribed medicine then it is suggested that you bring a supply of this medicine to the US with you or have your parents mail what you need while you are here. Prescriptions are costly and if you need a prescription for medicine while you are here (unexpectedly) you will need to have some extra money available for that eventuality. Prescriptions in the United States can be $100 for one series or dose - even although you have insurance.

Health Services

The first encounter that you may have with the Health Center (Student Health Services) could be as you prepare to arrive at the college. Immunization records are required for all students. Please carefully read the document
"INFORMATION FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS ABOUT IMMUNIZATIONS."

In order to determine your Health Service needs you must complete the following information online:

Once the College has received your immunization record the Health Center will review it and determine whether updated or further immunization is required. The Student Health Service is a vital service because the staff at the center can give you medical assistance that may prevent you from needing to go to see a doctor and incur unnecessary expenses. Going to the Student Service in Somers Residence (on campus residence building) will result in no charge for an appointment and most services. (Students are charged for immunizations and lab fees.)

The Student Health Services fee is separate from the College health insurance and will be $83 per semester for the academic year 2008/09. All undergraduate students are required to pay the student health fee which shows up on your student account. For more information see the Student Health Services website.
