It is vital that you are registered for classes before arriving at the college. New students will receive an e-mail explaining to them how to register using the St. Scholastica website before they arrive on campus.

General Education Requirements

In the United States at a "Liberal Arts College" like St. Scholastica there is a presumption that prior learning in key academic areas has not necessarily taken place. Therefore all students are required to take general education requirements. All students (unless they have documented proof to have completed courses in these areas at College level) will have to take these classes. Each area requires a 4-credit class to be taken (this may be broken up into two 2-credit classes).

All majors offered at the College of St. Scholastica have a "schema" - a listing of classes to take in that degree program over four years. Find your major's schema. Then go to the first drop down list "Undergraduate Programs" and select your major.

On the right hand side (of the 4-year schema) there is a list of 'General Education Requirements'. If your first language is NOT English then you are not required to take another language here. Let me know what general education areas you may want to take classes, you are required to take 4 credits in each area. It is recommended that you take 16 credits to stay on track to complete your degree in four years, more than 18 credits you will be charged more tuition (18 credits is a lot for your first semester) and 12 credits is the minimum required for all International Students.

Dignitas

This program was developed to assist freshmen (first year) College students in their first year at the College. This program is required for all entering freshmen and runs through the whole of the first year of college. In fall semester Dignitas is a class taken for two credits and in spring semester another two credits. College Catalog

Another tool that will benefit you is the College catalog, this gives you information about each department and every class offered in the departments.

Academic Advisors

Each student is assigned an Academic Advisor within two weeks of arriving at the College. An Academic Advisor is a member of staff or faculty at the College who will serve to guide a student through their academic program and ensure that they are taking the required classes in order to help the student graduate in time.

All freshmen (first year) students are required to take Dignitas (explained above). The instructor for Dignitas is the Academic Advisor for the student for the first year. After this time the student is asked to find their own Academic Advisor within their department of study, this requires completing a simple form.

Transfer students are placed with an Academic Advisor in their department of study within two weeks of their arrival at the College. Students are notified of their advisor through the mail on campus. If for some reason a transfer student wishes to be advised by another person, an Advisor change form is available to be completed which is available from the Registrar's Office.
