Student Health Services

Student Health Services is a vital resource for students because the staff at the center can give you medical assistance that may prevent you from needing to go to see a doctor (which even with the College health insurance you will need to pay some portion of this). Health related services are very costly in the United States. All full time students are required to pay the Health Service fee and this allows full use of the Health Service facility.

Immunization records are required for all students. Immunization requirements for students at St. Scholastica.

Once the College has received your immunization record Student Health Services will review it and determine whether updated or further immunization is required. This may be done prior to or at international student orientation. If this is not completed by orientation a "Health Hold" will be placed on your student account, which will prevent you from registering for classes for the next semester. It is therefore very important to ensure that your immunization are up-to-date before arriving in the U.S.

If you have difficulty obtaining immunizations in your home country - these can be completed at the College or in Duluth. The College Health Services are able to provide most vaccines, but at a cost. It is usually cheaper to access immunizations at the local county health services department. If you would like to need to be immunized and taken off campus, please contact the Office of International Student Services.

The Health Service fee is separate to the College health insurance and will be $83 per semester for the academic year 2008/09. You also need to ensure each semester that this charge is made to your bill.

For more information see the Health Services Website

During semester breaks the College Health Service is closed. At these times students are recommended to call the Family Practice Center for an appointment (218) 723-1112.

Health Insurance

1. ALL International Students are required to have Health Insurance that covers accident and illness while studying in the US. In addition you may wish to buy travel insurance to cover you while you travel to and from the college since most insurance will not cover you for travel. Travel insurance will also cover lost or damaged baggage and some other items

2. You must enroll in a College of St. Scholastica's endorsed policy by the beginning of each school year.

All international students are required to enroll in either Study USA-Health Care Insurance OR The College of St. Scholastica's Student Health Insurance. The Study-USA Health Plan's premium rates start at $493 for 12 months. The College of St. Scholastica's Health Insurance premium rate is $1020 for 12 months. (There are some differences in the two plans. Attached is an outline detailing some of those differences).

If you wish to enroll in the Study USA plan, you can view complete details at the Study USA Health Care Insurance Web site. If you wish to enroll in the College of St. Scholastica Plan, contact Deb Olson in the College of St. Scholastica Business Office).

Important: The College of St. Scholastica requires enrollment in one of these two plans for a 12 month period of time. Your enrollment period will be from Sept 2nd through September 1st. The charges for the insurance will be billed to your student account in two increments split between fall and spring semesters.

Further questions or inquiries contact either the Office of International Student Services or Tad Sears

Note: Some students may be eligible to waive the College Health Insurance. If you have questions about this, please contact the Office of International Student Services.

3. If you are eligible to waive the College Health Insurance, then your insurance plan is required to meet certain minimum standards. If you are in a College sport then you need to have extra insurance coverage.

4. The College Health Insurance coverage is not comprehensive. The College has looked into other insurance options, but they were more expensive. The main purpose of the insurance is to deal with injury, illness, and emergencies.
