Sexual Assault
CSS's Survey Results:
550 CSS students responded to the survey on Sexual Assault/Sexual Harassment
- 4% of the students report having been sexually assaulted while a student at CSS.
- 17% of the students state having been a victim of sexual assault during a time when they were not a student at CSS.
- 12% of the students report knowing of another student having been sexually assaulted while at CSS.
- 12% stated feeling as if there were barriers to reporting incidents of sexual assault at CSS.
- 20% of the student wanted more information regarding issues of sexual assault and sexual harassment.
What Is Sexual Assault?
We do not like to think about it. It is something that happens to other people, not me, not you. Unfortunately, it is a serious problem on college campuses throughout the nation.
Sexual Assault can be defined as any threat of, or deliberate physical contact of a sexual nature which is against another person's will or without consent.
Acquaintance Rape is defined as forced or manipulated sexual contact or intercourse by a friend or acquaintance. It as an act of violence, aggression, and power.
Facts and Figures:
- One fifth of college women experience forced sex by someone they know. (Ms. Magazine/National Institute of Health Study)
- More than 80% of all rapes are acquaintance rapes. (U.S. Justice Department)
- The majority of acquaintance rapes are committed against women between the ages of 15-24. (U.S. Justice Department)
- 3% of college women experience a completed and/or attempted rape during a typical college year. (National College Women Sexual Victimization Study, 2001)
- A study estimated that 13% of college women have been stalked since the beginning of the school year. (National College Women Sexual Victimization Study, 2001).
- 1/3 of high school and college students experience violence in an intimate relationship during their dating years. (Women's Health Issues, 1994)
- 1 in 12 students surveyed had committed acts legally defined as rape. (A study of 6,000 college students)
- 75% of male students and 55% of female students involved in date rape had been drinking or using drugs. (A study of 6,000 college students)
