Security emergency phone number: 6175
Campus emergency phone number: 4000

The mission of Campus Security is to consistently seek and find ways to promote and preserve a safe and secure environment, and to deliver quality security and community safety services in a professional and sensitive manner.

St. Scholastica employs contract security services through Burns Security Services based in the Twin Cities. The security officers provide 24-hour surveillance of the campus buildings and grounds. They make routine patrols of campus on foot and by vehicle of the campus grounds, parking lots and buildings, including the residence hall and apartment buildings. They serve as a prevention body as well as an enforcement body and provide this service to the entire St. Scholastica community. The officers are equipped with radio telephones enabling them to respond quickly to any call for assistance on campus by calling extension 6175 from any campus telephone. All officers are trained in emergency first aid and CPR.

Campus Security recognizes that a campus law enforcement agency can only operate at its maximum potential with the supportive input from the people it serves. Through a variety of services offered and through community oriented programs, we strive to meet the needs of the members of the campus community.

Campus Escort Service and Campus Security Notification Telephones

An on-campus walking and vehicle escort service is provided 24 hours a day for all members of the College community by the Campus Security Department. We strongly encourage people to use this service if they will be traveling across campus alone in the evenings. Escort Services may be arranged by calling Campus Security at extension 6175 from any college telephone.

When arriving on campus during evening hours, a campus escort can be requested by using one of the following direct dial campus security phones located at the following parking lots:

  • Parking Lot 1 (located behind the apartment buildings) - two phones are located in this parking lot.
  • Entrance to Lot 1 by the Pine Apartment laundry room.
  • Next to the walkway behind Birch Apartments.
  • Entrance to Parking Lot 2 (located below the Reif Recreation Center)
  • Entrance to Parking Lot 5 (this is the large parking lot located below Somers Hall)
  • Entrance to Parking Lot 6 (located on the west side of the creek)
  • Entrance to Parking Lot 6A (located on the east side of the creek)
  • North entrance to Parking Lot 13 (located below the Science Building)

In the Parking Lots

Crimes of violence can sometimes occur in parking areas. These tips can help you stay out of harm's way.

  • Have your car key in hand; ready to put in the lock as you're walking toward your vehicle.
  • Check underneath your vehicle before getting too close. Someone underneath could grab you if you're standing close by.
  • Look in the back seat or bed of a pickup before entering your vehicle to make sure no one is hiding back there.
  • Park as close as you can to your destination.
  • Walk out to your vehicle with someone you know and trust or call Campus Security for an escort, especially when it's dark.
  • Always keep you vehicle locked.

Campus Crime Reporting Hotline

The Campus Crime Reporting Hotline is a confidential reporting process which allows the campus community to report any acts of violence or criminal activity that occur on campus . If you have any information on an act of violence or criminal activity, call H.E.L.P. (extension 4357) from any campus telephone.

All information will be kept confidential.

Harassing phone calls

Anyone can become the victim of harassing, annoying, obscene or threatening telephone calls. These calls can be prevented or avoided by learning and using some simple techniques to decrease your potential of becoming a victim.

  • Don't give the caller the satisfaction, simply hang up.
  • Notify Campus Security immediately and provide them with all the necessary information.
  • Use a Log to document all the information if you start to receive a series of calls.
  • Notify your roommates of the problem.
  • If the caller asks you for various information such as your name or names of your roommates, your telephone number, where you live, etc. Don't give it out.
  • Consider purchasing an answering machine that will allow you to screen your calls.

Remember, anyone can become the victim of unwanted telephone calls, but by using some common sense and quick thinking, you can reduce your chances of being victimized.

RESIDENCE CRIME PREVENTION

Whether you live on or off campus, it's crucial that you take responsibility for your surrounding. The following tips can protect you from becoming a victim of violence.

Keep your door locked even when you're in your room. It's easy for others to enter your residence without you knowing, especially if your stereo or television is playing or you are in a back room.

Do not prop open exterior building doors. You are jeopardizing other's safety, as well as your own. If you see a door propped, close it.

  • Don't open your door for strangers. If your entry door is equipped with a security peep hole, look to see who it is before opening your door.
  • If you receive annoying or obscene telephone calls, notify the Security Department immediately. It may be a prank, but you never know.
  • Never let unauthorized people into the residence buildings.
  • Be observant of any strangers loitering or checking doors in your building. Note their description and report all suspicious activity to the Security Department immediately.
  • Close your blinds and curtains after dark.
  • Lock windows that are accessible from the outside.
  • If you suspect someone is in your room or apartment, don't go in. Go to a telephone and call Security at extension 6175.
  • Be cautious when using bathroom facilities when there is no one else around, particularly at night.

Never sleep in an unlocked room or apartment. Do not put your name or address on key rings.

If you see a crime being committed on campus, contact Campus Security immediately at telephone extension 6175.

Personal Info

It's a good plan to keep personal information to yourself in many situations.

  • Don't post notes on your door memo board saying where you are, what your schedule is, etc.
  • Leave any messages for your roommates inside where you live.
  • Don't attach your ID or room number to your keys. If you loose them, the finder will know where you live.
  • Never leave a message on your telephone answering machine that says that you are gone or where you are. This way the caller will not know if you are gone or where you may be.
  • Don't give out your name or any other personal information about yourself over the phone such as birth date, social security number, where you live, etc. By giving out personal information over the phone may not only lead to identity theft, but may lead to an act of violence.
  • Beware of internet chat lines, and if you receive a threatening e-mail, do not delete it. And contact Campus Security immediately.

Hate/Bias-Related incidents - If someone threatens you based on your race, religion, gender, sexual orientation or other characteristics, get help right away.

Being Stalked - If you feel you are being stalked on campus, contact Campus Security immediately.
