Alternative Spring Break Trips 2008

3 Great Opportunities:

Christian Appalachian Project Workfest-Kentucky
Catholic Charities- Baltimore
Rainy River Reserve- Ontario, Canada

                                Christian Appalachian Project-Kentucky

CAP is an organization that works year-round with the very poor in the rural Appalachian region of Kentucky.  As part of their service to the poor they invited college students to come to Kentucky to help during Spring Break, they call it WORKFEST.  So while helping with Workfest, you will go with a group of other college students (nearly 15 colleges from around the country will be there) to a house to work to rebuild it.  It is similar to Habitat for Humanity.  One difference is that you are not building a house from scratch you are rebuilding it (no prior building experience needed).

You will stay in cabins on bunk beds.  It has a bit of a ‘summer camp’ feel.  Each evening you will do reflections on the work you are doing.  There is also a fun activity each evening (Bluegrass Music, Dance, Storyteller, etc.).  You will also have the opportunity to learn more about the Appalachian way of life.  It’s a And great way to meet new people and stretch yourself, while also offering assistance to those in need.
Check out their website to find info about CAP and WORKFEST

                                                Catholic Charities- Baltimore

While in Baltimore you will be working with Catholic Charities at a place called “Our Daily Bread” (ODB).  ODB is a restaurant, of sorts, for people who are homeless.  So you will work as their wait staff and basically share in the ministry of presence as you get to know the people who walk through the door.  In the past there has also been service done at another site which could happen again.

You will stay in an apartment/house type setting at Sarah's House.  Sarah's House is an emergency/transitional shelter that works with families.  Each day you will do some reflecting on how the community service you are doing and the experience in general is speaking to you.  You will find both challenge and great joy during your time in Baltimore.  There will also be ample time for exploring the D.C. area.  It’s a great way to meet new people and stretch yourself, while also offering assistance to those in need.
