Common Myths and Misconceptions
All of the following statements are FALSE:
- Students with disabilities are not suited to be in the college setting and probably will never hold important or responsible positions.
- When you learn that a student has a disability you have learned the most significant thing about his or her personality.
- Students with disabilities are just trying to "milk the system" to get an easy ride through school.
- Students seek help out of laziness.
- Accommodations give advantages over other students.
- People who have disabilities are brave and courageous.
- There is little one can do to help eliminate barriers confronting persons with disabilities.
- People who offer help to persons with disabilities usually know how to give the help needed.
- If you cannot see the disability, it does not exist.
