1.What does it mean to "learn online"?
Learning online at The College of St. Scholastica means accessing courses through the Internet. Courses are offered through a web-based environment called WebCT. The technology is very student friendly and easy to use. If you can email, you can learn online! Research shows that students learning online may learn as well or even better than in traditional face-to-face classes. Take a look at our demo course for a better understanding of what an online course looks like.
2. What are the benefits for learning online?
The wonderful thing about learning online is the flexibility! You can work around your busy work and family schedule. You have access 24/7 to course materials, resources, and the course web page. Your own technology skills will also increase by participating in an online course. You will learn how to access online resources, communicate online with your instructors and colleagues, and use the Internet to its full advantage. These skills can be transferred to your own classroom, helping to educate learners who are better prepared to enter the work force.
3. How will I communicate with my instructors and other students?
You will have many opportunities to interact with instructors and other students. Students typically respond to course readings and interact with other students by responding to an e-discussion board. You can email and call your instructor if you have questions or concerns about assignments. In online learning, all students respond, so all voices are heard. There is less chance for bias and you have the chance to "listen" and respond to the viewpoints of all students..
4. Will the coursework apply to my situation?
Yes! The faculty at St. Scholastica work hard to help create assignments that fit your teaching or work situation. Faculty are also very willing to modify an assignment to meet your needs if warranted.
5. What if I am not a teacher?
Many professionals may find that a program in curriculum and instruction may meet their needs. The ECI program has had many working with professionals in other fields. For example, we have students who are occupational therapists, police department trainers, college teachers, and corporate trainers.
6. Can I work with other learners?
Yes! The ECI program will support your desire to work with another colleague or even a cohort of people. Students can register and take all of their courses together if they wish, creating an "online cohort". There is also the opportunity to complete some assignments with other students.
7. What technology do I need to participate?
You will need a computer and access to the Internet.
8. Can graduate students get financial aid?
Yes! Most of our students are eligible for financial aid. We urge you to contact our financial aid office for more information.
9. How do I receive and hand in assignments?
Students receive information about assignments through the web-based course environment. Every assignment is clearly described and faculty are available to support you as you work through your assignments. To hand in an assignment, you simply email it to your instructor. Students receive feedback from the faculty member in the same way.
10. When are classes held?
Courses run on a semester schedule. We have a fall and spring semester as well as a summer semester.
11. Why choose the Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction at The College of St. Scholastica?
