News: The School of Education Redesigns its Master's Degree in Curriculum and Instruction
We are currently in the process of redesigning our Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction program, so we are no longer accepting applications. The School of Education is designing a new and exciting program to reflect the needs of 21st century teachers, students, and schools. This new program is not ready at this time, but we welcome your contact information so that we can inform you when our new program is ready to accept applicants. Overview
The College of St. Scholastica master's degree program in Curriculum and Instruction seeks to challenge graduate students to evaluate their current practices, expand their views on K-12 student learning and assessment, and develop their capacity to apply theoretical concepts and research-based best practices in their classrooms. Faculty prepare graduate students to identify and analyze educational issues and provide leadership for innovative solutions within their work settings. Finally, students develop best practices in the courses they take and become proficient in using action research to address questions from their own practice.
Program Description
The Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction program provides access to a high quality graduate education through an online format. The program challenges students to examine their practice from an analytical and reflective viewpoint in order to encourage critical and creative thinking. Through increased awareness of current educational research and best practices, students are empowered to provide leadership in their educational settings. The program is designed to promote personal growth, professional development, and leadership potential of educators.
Core courses are designed to provide students with a solid foundation in effective teaching practices. These courses include an emphasis on student learning, diversity issues, and authentic assessment. The Learning Environment Core courses further address students' interest areas and challenges. The selection includes a wide range of relevant educational topics.
Outcomes
Program outcomes are aligned with the National Board of Professional Teachers Standards (NBPTS) and the Interstate New Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium (INTASC) Standards.
Upon completion of the Curriculum and Instruction graduate program at The College of St. Scholastica, the graduate will be able to:
- Analyze and reflect on current approaches to teaching and learning;
- Examine theoretical bases of educational innovations and thought presented in the literature;
- Identify contemporary issues in education and examine their effect on classroom practice;
- Develop and apply strategies for addressing a broad range of educational challenges;
- Provide appropriate educational opportunities for the diverse population of students they serve;
- Evaluate professional growth they achieve as a result of participating in the program;
- Foster relationships with school colleagues, parents, and agencies in the larger community;
- Conduct classroom action research project to answer questions related to their practice.
Format
The program is offered in an online format, which allows education professionals to maintain their current employment status while enhancing their knowledge and skills. Students are not required to attend formal class meetings other than the opening seminar and the closing colloquium. The Curriculum and Instruction program can be completed in two years with two courses per semester.
Students are encouraged to work together, and some assignments require collaboration with colleagues. This collaboration can occur in person or through various communication methods. An optional summer institute is offered on-campus during the summer session. Students order the required course materials from the College bookstore, which will then be mailed at the beginning of each term.
