Chinese Erhu virtuoso Yang Ying began playing the erhu, a two stringed Chinese violin, at the age of five. For over twenty years she was the featured solo instrumentalist with the Central Song and Dance Ensemble, the premier traditional musical and dance troupe in in Bejiing, China. As the featured soloist, Yang Ying performed for many Heads of State including Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, and Jimmy Carter.
Ms. Yang Ying was the founder, bass player, and singer for Cobra, the first all female rock band in China. Cobra was one of seven bands to play at the largest rock concert ever held in China. Ying founded this band soon after Tiananmen Square uprising in 1989, at considerable risk to her position with the Chinese National Song and Dance Ensemble. Continue a Mitchell Auditorium Christmas tradition with new selections from Katie McMahon. Katie hails from Dublin, Ireland and is best know as the "the Voice of Riverdance," with soaring soprano solos that were described as "poetry, perfection and purity." Katie is classically trained in voice and harp, but for the past 10 years she has specialized in traditional Irish music.

The Duluth News Tribune gave this glowing report of Katie's 2008 concert in the Mitchell, "Katie McMahon brought her dazzling voice, her sparkling personality, a wealth of Irish musical tradition, and a troupe of some of the finest Twin Cities musicians to celebrate a night of Christmas music the way it might feel in a candlelit pub in County Cork on a frosty December night." www.katiemcmahon.com

Join us for four days of sacred music and art featuring the famed multiphonic singers of Drepung Loseling monastery.

Opening Ceremony February 16 at 1 p.m. in the Mitchell Auditorium- Creation of Tibetan sand painting and
community sand painting

This cultural experience will begin with music performed by the Tibetan monks as they begin constructing their sacred art. From the artistic traditions of Tantric Buddhism painting with colored sand ranks as one of the most unique and exquisite. To construct the mandala, millions of grains of sand are painstakingly laid into place on a flat platform over a period of four days. The Duluth community will also be able to experience this ancient art form by participating in building a sand painting designed by the CSS InterNational Club members.

Closing Ceremony Feb. 19 at 1 p.m.in the Mitchell Auditorium
When finished, the mandala is destroyed to symbolize the impermanence of all that exists. The colored sands are swept up and will be transported in a procession to the Tisher Creek on campus to be poured into the stream, where it is believed that the waters carry the healing energies
throughout the world.

Sacred Music, Sacred Dance Concert February 19 at 7:30 p.m.
Tibetan ceremonial music is particularly renowned in the West for its two forms of multiphonic singing In both forms, each of the main chantmasters simultaneously intones three notes, thus each individually creating a complete chord. The Tibetans are the only culture on earth that cultivate this most extraordinary vocal ability. The Drepung Loseling monks' performances feature this multiphonic technique and masked dances together with traditional temple instruments such as cymbals, bells, drums, long horn trumpets, and high horns.

Marrying passionate virtuosity with a stealthy sense of humor, guitarists Glenn Lévesque, Marc Morin and Sébastien Dufour charm the ears of seasoned critics and capture the hearts of their ever-expanding audiences.

The Trio's music takes listeners on a journey through the world's many cultures - from the mysterious, exotic melodies of India to the hot rhythms of South America, Spain, the Balkans, the Orient and traditional Quebec and... Hollywood.

Since it was founded in 1998, the MG3 has given hundreds of concerts in North America and Europe. Its 2002 concert, entitled "The heat of the Day," and performed in Montreal, was nominated for Concert of the Year (Jazz and World Music) at the prestigious Prix Opus 2002, celebrating musical excellence in Quebec. The Trio's second album, Garam Masala, was also nominated for Disk of the Year (J&WM). Their 3rd CD was released in 2006.
