The purpose of a First Year Development Program's Group Leader is to foster a relationship with FYDP students who will promote their academic and social success at the College of St. Scholastica. Group Leaders are upperclass students interviewed and selected to mentor up to six first year students in the FYDP program. They are trained in the spring semester prior to the start of the next academic year, and participate in the planning and implementation of Academic Orientation, which is held the week before fall semester begins.
Through a multitude of self-assessments, inventories, and discussions, students will examine their strengths and challenges as a person and as a student. Coordinators and group leaders will work with students on how to capitalize on their strengths and identify challenges. Students with examine their challenges and work to find resources and solutions to challenges that may impact their academic learning and living experience. Students will attend a mini-course on critical reading and thinking taught by experienced faculty. Students will learn about the challenges of transitioning to college, including living in a dorm, caring for yourself mentally and physically; as well as academic success strategies, such as time management, test taking, effective reading, and note taking. Study time and fun activities organized and facilitated by upper class Group Leaders will offer a students a chance to get to know each other and the upperclass students they will work with for the next year.
