The Rec Crew assist the full time Campus Rec staff in running the Campus Recreation facilities and programs. Rec Crew members greet customers and answer their questions, sell recreation memberships, check out sports equipment, keep the facilities and equipment safe and clean, and schedule court reservations.
Rec Crew learn valuable career-related skils in customer service, communication, leadership/supervision, problems solving and conflict resolution, decision making, team work, management, and so much more!
You don't need to have an athletic background to work for the Rec Crew, but any interest in fitness, sports, or outdoor recreation is a plus. CPR/AED, first aid, and other similar certifications are beneficial.
INTRAMURAL OFFICIALS & SPORT SUPERVISORS learn life-long skills while working for Campus Rec, including: leadership and decision making skills, conflict-resolution and time-management skills, communication, common sense, cooperation and teamwork, character and conduct, confidence, composure, and so much more!
Intramural Sports Officials
The INTRAMURAL OFFICIAL/UMPIRE plays a critical role in activity/game supervision and administration. An official or umpire is under fire and "on the line" when he/she puts on the whistle and stripes and walks on to the court or field. It takes a special person to accept this role and these responsibilities to assure a quality officiated contest for all participants. The IM official plays a vital role in our leagues and special events and is essential to the quality intramural sports program we offer at CSS. We provide high quality instruction for our officials in the rules, mechanics, and techniques of sports officiating in addition to sport rules exams. The officials are paid and required to attend the training sessions and clinics. We view sports officiating as an active way of involving yourself in sports for a lifetime.
Intramural Sports Supervisors
Intramural Sport Supervisors must have a background in various sports, have great leadership and conflict resolution skills, and be willing to work a variety of hours including late nights and weekends. Previous experience with game management, officiating, scorekeeping, and running tournaments/leagues is beneficial. CPR/AED and First Aid are required. Sport officials are promoted to sport supervisor based on job performance, communication, leadership, and organizational skills.
Intramural Supervisors provide league administration, game management, and supervision of all intramural contests. IM Supervisors also train officials and scorekeepers, conduct Captain's meetings, communicate with Captain's/teams, and enforce all intramural program policies and specific game rules for all events. IM Supervisors schedule sport leagues and officials, update rosters, monitor player eligibility, train officials/scorekeepers, manage equipment, conduct Captain's meetings, set-up/take-down courts/fields, update sport rules and game results, manage the Intramural bulletin board in the BWC, take photos, assist in marketing, supervise all intramural competitions including special events, evaluate officials/scorekeepers, handle participant conflicts, provide basic first aid care, and communicate with the Intramural Sports Coordinator.
Campus Rec is looking for a few high energy students interested in teaching dance, aerobic, or group exercise classes at the Campus Rec fitness center in the BWC. If you have previous instructor experience at your local community center, YMCA/YWCA, or fitness center, this job is for you! This is your chance to get paid while working out and having the time of your life!
Instructors are needed to teach Jazz, Ballroom, Mamba, Samba, Salsa, Zumba, Hip Hop, Belly, Ballet or other dance forms.
Aerobics/Fitness Instructor *
Instructors are needed to teach Kickboxing, Step, cardio/core, strength and conditioning, and other basic level fitness classes. If you've taught an exercise class, or if you have an interest in learning how to teach an aerobic/fitness class, please submit a Group Fitness Instructors application form. No teaching experience required, but you must attend and pass the mandatory CSS Fitness Instructors training program (free) offered 4 evenings in early September.
* Instructors must give a commitment to teach a minimum of one class a week each semester for 3 semesters. Hiring priority is given to work study eligible students. Wages are paid according to current CSS student employment guidelines.
Outdoor Pursuit! employees are responsible for maintaining a safe and engaging environment at the climbing wall. Student employees must have strong public relation skills, a strong interest in adventure sports and climbing, be organized and trustworthy and safety conscious. OP! student employees must also have a willingness to train and engage in safety and rescue skills as well as group leadership facilitation. All employees are expected to regularly attend a guide training tract, attend regular climbing wall meetings, and are encouraged to guide a minimum of two events each year. Once employees are certified in a particular outdoor pursuit, the employee will get paid according to the OP! guide payment schedule. Fees for such events will be waived. Most positions also require regular, monthly progress reports at staff meetings.
OP! Staff/Climbing Wall Special Events Coordinator/Guide
The Climbing Wall Special Events Coordinator is responsible for coordinating one special event at the Climbing Wall each semester - a Climbing Competition in Late November and an open house event in early February. This employee is responsible for organizing, assigning and coordinating all facets of each of these events. He/She will offer a monthly progress report at staff meetings, is expected to regularly attend a guide training tract, attends regular climbing wall meetings, and is encouraged to guide at least 2 events each year.
OP! Staff/Climbing Wall Student Manager/Guide
The Climbing Wall Student Manager schedules and manages climbing wall staff, oversee shifts, offers performance reviews, hosts and coordinates staff meetings, collects time cards and reports regularly to the OP! Coordinator. The CW Manager will be directly supervised by the OP! Coordinator and will work jointly to improve and maintain strong services and safety for the student population at CSS.
OP! Staff/Superior Hiking Trail Challenge Coordinator/Guide
The Superior Hiking Trail Challenge Coordinator organizes and publicize the Superior Hiking Trail Challenge. He/She creates and corresponds with a list-serve of interested participants, publicizes organized hikes, creates and maintains a discussion board aimed at helping partner hikers for completing trail sections. This employee also offers a monthly progress report at staff meetings.

The OP! Equipment Manager inventories, re-stocks, repairs and maintains all OP! equipment. He/She prepares equipment for outings; cleans, repairs and replaces equipment after outings, makes suggestions for future purchases, and maintains an organized and clean storage system. This employee offers a monthly progress report at staff meetings.
OP! Staff/Marketing Assistant/Guide
The OP! Marketing Assistant is expected to maintain the OP! webpage, send out a bi-weekly newsletter and assist in many other tasks toward marketing OP! trips and the climbing wall to the student body. This employee offers a monthly progress report at staff meetings.
