An Update on ATHENS Project Activities

GOOD NEWS!

We received official word of our 5th (and final – boo hoo!) year of continuation funding from the U.S. Department of Education, Title III!   It’s a go!

We’ve hired Lindsey Shoden, junior student in the health information management program to provide clinical case building support for us over the summer 2006.

We are very pleased to announce that the Graduate Nursing Program faculty and students will begin using the ATHENS EHR System in Fall 2006.

Summary of 2005-2006 Aademic Year Activities:

Fall 05          11 courses in 6 departments and 27 faculty involved

Spring 06     12 courses in 6 departments and 21 faculty involved

Summer 06   4 courses in 2 departments and 4 faculty involved

In total over 600 students and faculty are involved.

Highlight ATHENS Events from Fall and Spring

Successfully completed our first EHR system upgrade in January 2006 which brought a few new functionalities to the system; notably PowerPlan and PowerNote applications.  These are especially applicable to the graduate nursing program as they plan for the use of ATHENS EHR beginning Fall 06.

Enhanced the

ATHENS Help Place
website by embedding six (6) links under the header of “Clinical Practice Guidelines) so students and faculty can directly link from within the ATHENS EHR system to valid sources for obtaining quality clinical and health information.  Of particular interest:  The Cochrane Library, Health and Wellness, Mayo Health Information and MicroMedex Healthcare Series.

Initiated the use of the “Pristine” clinical cases, which were placed into ATHENS EHR over Summer 2005, in several nursing courses.  Also began to use ATHENS EHR as a tool in conjunction with SimMan experiences in the nursing program.

Shirley Eichenwald Maki presented the Project at the Annual Meeting of the Association of Schools of Allied Health Professions in Houston, TX in late October 2005.

Shirley Eichenwald Maki also had an ATHENS Project e-Poster presentation at the Cerner User Conference in Orlando in late October 2005.

Initiated our first ATHENS Subscription Service Clients in Spring, 2006: one in Minnesota and one in Arizona.

Scheduled ATHENSPresentations – Spring and Summer

Kathleen Thiede, Beth Donahue, Sally Fauchald and Janelle Wapola accepted an invitation to present The ATHENS Project at the Minnesota Schools of Nursing Program Directors Meeting in lat May 2006.

Shirley Eichenwald Maki will be presenting an ATHENS Project Poster Session at the American Medical Informatics Association meeting in Phoenix, AZ in mid May 2006.

Beth Donahue and Kathleen Thiede will be doing a presentation on the use of ATHENS EHR with Simulations at the North American Learning Resources Conference – Nurse Educators: “Nursing Education on the Move: Technology, Creativity and Innovation” in Philadelphia, PA in June 2006.

The ATHENS Project will be a part of The College’s exhibit at the Minnesota e-Health Summit in late June 2006.

Kathleen Thiede, Marty Witrak and Shirley Eichenwald-Maki accepted an invitation to present The ATHENS Project at the State of Minnesota’s Health Education – Industry Partnership Council meeting in early June 2006.

Lynda Spangler has had  “ATHENS in Physical Therapy” story accepted for inclusion in Telehealth  (an online HIT newsletter) and it is scheduled to be e-published the end of May 2006.
