Q. I am an R.N. How do I earn the Bachelor's degree in Nursing? How does this program work for me?

A. The RN/BA track is designed for the RN with an associate degree or diploma who seeks a bachelor's degree in nursing. The program consists of general education requirements, nursing prerequisites, support courses and concentrated nursing courses. General education requirements of the College are waived if you have a bachelor's degree in another field. If you have an associate of arts degree or have met the Minnesota Transfer Curriculum, the majority of your general education requirements are satisfied.

Q. Is the program accredited?

A. The Baccalaureate program is approved by the Minnesota Board of Nursing and accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education.

Q. How are my achievements in nursing recognized?

A. The RN/BA track is designed to build on your experience as a registered nurse. Twenty semester credits in nursing are credited toward the BA degree upon validation of prior learning by means of a portfolio that documents what you have experienced as an RN.

Q. How many credits will I need to graduate?

A. You need 128 semester credits to earn the baccalaureate degree with a major in nursing from St. Scholastica. The credits may be gained in a number of ways:

Q. How long will it take to earn the BA degree?

A. The time needed for this degree will vary and depends on the number of credits that transfer. A student may attend either part time or full time.

  • Under the Online Completion program, the required nursing courses can be completed in two abridged semesters.


Q. What difference will a baccalaureate degree make in my ability to practice nursing?

A. Baccalaureate nursing emphasizes community based nursing practice, which is the wave of the future. An emphasis on leadership and management skills facilitates upward mobility. Competence in areas of health promotion and health teaching is developed along with skill in nursing interventions with those who are ill or injured. Baccalaureate education in nursing provides a foundation for graduate study.

Q. Is Financial assistance available?

The College's Financial Aid Office (218-723-6047) has programs of financial assistance for students including scholarships, grants, loans and college employment. There are substantial savings when courses are challenged or credit is given for prior learning. Employers may offer tuition reimbursement - check with your employer for eligibility. You might also consider looking into federal assistance through the Nursing Education Loan Repayment Program at http://www.bhpr.hrsa.gov/nursing/loanrepay.htm
