Immigration in Minnesota
The following resources provide information on the current immigrant communities' experiences, as well as general advocacy and support organizations. Most of the organizations listed are those visited by the Social Work with Immigrant Communities classes.
General
Center for Victims of Torture is an organization that works to heal the wounds of torture on individuals, families, and their communities and to stop torture worldwide.
The Advocates for Human Rights is a non-governmental organization dedicated to the promotion and protection of internationally recognized human rights (2008).
Energy of a Nation presentation introduces immigration terminology, explains the process of how a person obtains a green card and citizenship, and discusses past and present immigration in Minnesota (2006).
Immigration in Minnesota: Discovering Common Ground is provided by The Minneapolis Foundation and supplies definitions, history and information on immigrant groups (2004).
Immigrants in Minnesota is webpage provided by the Minnesota Legislature and is intended to be an introduction to the topic of immigration in Minnesota (2008).
Health Resources
Minnesota International Health Volunteers is an organization which works to improve the health of women, children and their communities around the world, including immigrant communities in the United States (2007).
Center for International Health is a clinic of HealthPartners in St. Paul (2008).
Legal and Social Justice Resources
Immigration Law Center of Minnesota is a non-profit organization which provides legal services to low-income immigrants in Minnesota (2008).
Office for Social Justice is a project of the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis and serves those most in need by calling for justice, including the immigrant communities in Minnesota (2008).
The Minnesota Immigrant Freedom Network is a grassroots, nonprofit, nonpartisan organization whose mission is to fix the broken immigration system. They are particularly active in advocating for passage of the Dream Act (2008).
Education Resources
LEAP Academy is an optional intensive English language learning program through St. Paul Public Schools (2008).
Islamic Resource Group works to build bridges through education about Islam (2008).
Minnesota Internship Charter School (MNIC) Academies include an English Language Academy for recent immigrant students (2008).
