OverviewWhat is music? The sound of creativity, inspiration, passion, reflection, reverence? What words alone cannot express or explore? At St. Scholastica, a degree in music can prepare students for careers in education, the arts, business and entertainment. It can lend expertise and a foundation for a music-related field. Some students major or minor in music as part of a pre-professional program such as pre-medicine. Others add the study to their liberal arts repertoire as a means of personal enrichment. What Practical and Performing Experiences Are Available? St. Scholastica students, both majors and non-majors, present frequent informal performances as well as solo, joint, and ensemble recitals in more formal settings on campus, in the community, and around the region. They perform for internationally renowned artists in master classes. They tour with our ensembles. They participate in state and regional competitions. They are church choir directors, soloists, or organists, and some teach in the Music Preparatory Department on campus. Practical experience may be gained at summer festivals, student teaching, working in the Duluth-Superior Symphony Orchestra office, establishing an independent studio, and coordinating music programs for senior citizens.
