The College of St. Scholastica

The College of St. Scholastica was the first college in the nation to grant a bachelor's degree in this professional field. Our program has been accredited for over 50 years and is considered one of the premier programs in the nation. Graduates are qualified to take the national registration examination to earn professional recognition as a Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA).

A major in Health Information Management provides students with professional knowledge necessary to assume management responsibility for health records and health information systems in a variety of health related settings, including hospitals, clinics, long term care settings, consulting firms, government agencies, insurance companies and software vendors. It is ideal for the person who likes the health care environment but does not want direct patient contact.

For more information about the Health Information Management (HIM) profession, educational pathways, careers, and tips for financing your education, please visit the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) web site as well as HIM Careers, a site maintained by AHIMA.

The College's virtual ATHENS Medical Center offers student access to an Academic EHR System

As the healthcare industry is being transformed by health information technologies  (in particular, electronic health record systems),  students in health professions must be prepared to effectively use these tools in their future healthcare workplaces. HIIM faculty at The College of St. Scholastica were pioneers in creating a state-of-the-art electronic medical record system in an academic setting through a collaborative project with Cerner called ATHENS. Students in the HIIM Program at The College of St. Scholastica have significant levels of hands-on experience using a state-of-the-art electronic health record system within our virtual ATHENS Medical Center to gain confidence and competence in using this type of information technology as a tool to enhance the quality of their professional practice .

The ATHENS project won numerous awards and was so successful that the College launched a fee-for-service product called the Academic Electronic Health Record (AEHR) through its Center for Healthcare Innovation.  For more information about this unique product, visit the Center for Healthcare Innovation website at:  Center
