Hal Strough, PhD, ATR, ATC: Department Chair/Assistant Professor Dr. Hal Strough joined The College of St. Scholastica in August 2008 as Founding Chair. He was hired to establish the department, create the program, and spearhead attainment of CAATE accreditation. He was previously at UW Oshkosh since August 1999 where he started the athletic training major, spearheaded attainment of CAATE accreditation, and coordinated a $1,000,000 expansion of athletic training facilities. Before that he served as Athletic Training Curriculum Director and Assistant Professor at Georgetown College (KY) for one year following a four-year appointment as a Doctoral Teaching Assistant in the Department of Health, Kinesiology, and Leisure Studies at Purdue University. While at Purdue, Dr. Strough spent two years teaching and two years working in the athletic training facility at the recreational gymnasium. Before that, he served as Head Athletic Trainer/Instructor at Campbellsville (KY) University from 1991 to 1994. Dr. Strough received his Ph.D. from Purdue University in 1998, his Ed.S. from Eastern Kentucky University in 1991, his M.S. from Eastern Kentucky University in 1990 and his B.S. from Central Michigan University in 1989. Dr. Strough is a certified member of the BOC, Inc., a BOC exam item writer, and CAATE Site Visitor. He is also an American Red Cross Instructor for Professional Rescuer CPR/AED, Prevention of Disease Transmission, Oxygen Administration for the Professional Rescuer, and Sport Safety Training. |

Amy Brugge, MS, ATC: Academic Clinical Director/Assistant Professor Ms. Amy Brugge joined The College of St. Scholastica in July 2009 as the department's first Academic Clinical Director. She was hired to develop, oversee, and assess all phases of the clinical education program as well as teaching in the department. She was previously at University of Wisconsin Stevens Point where she served as Lecturer/Assistant Athletic Trainer. During her tenure there she worked with the Men's Ice Hockey, Women's Soccer, Women's Softball, Women's Tennis, Women's Golf, and Cross Country Teams. Amy also taught in the School of Health, Exercise Science, and Athletics. Prior to that she completed her Post-Certification Master's in Athletic Training at Indiana University in Bloomington in 2005 and her BS in Athletic Training from Minnesota State University-Mankato. Ms. Brugge is a certified member of the NATA, licensed in Wisconsin, a Clinical Instructor Educator, and American Red Cross Emergency Response Instructor. She has also completed the Graston Soft Tissue Mobilization M-1 Module. Amy is a GLATA (Great Lakes Athletic Trainers' Association) Student Senate Advisor. |

Kenji Sudoh, MD: Medical Director Dr. Kenji Sudoh serves as the Medical Director for the Department of Athletic Training. He is also co-team physician for CSS athletics and has been with Duluth Clinic Department of Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine since 2006. A graduate of the University of Minnesota Medical School, he served his residency with the Duluth Family Practice Center and his fellowship at Hennepin County Medical Center. He is board certified in Family Medicine and Sports Medicine. |

Sean Degerstrom, MAEd, ATR, ATC, CSCS: Assistant Athletic Trainer at CSS Sean joined The College of St. Scholastica in August 2008 as an Assistant Athletic Trainer after serving as Assistant Athletic Trainer/Instructor/ACI at the College of Mount Saint Joseph in Cincinnati, OH from August 2006-July 2008. Prior to that he was at Heidelberg College in Ohio from January 2005-May 2006 in a similar capacity. Mr. Degerstrom received his MAEd from Heidelberg College in May 2005 and two BS degrees from University of North Dakota in Grand Forks. He is a certified member of the NATA (National Athletic Trainers Association) and NSCA (National Strength and Conditioning Association). Sean is also an American Red Cross CPR, First Aid, and AED Instrusctor. |

Jon Nelson, PhD, PT: Professor of PT; Instructor of Functional Anatomy A native of Minnesota Jon Nelson received his bachelors degree from Augsburg College in 1975. After working several years with children and adults with developmental disabilities he returned to graduated school to pursue research interests in movement control and neuroscience. He received a masters degree from the University of Toledo in 1979 and a Ph.D. in Anatomy from the Medical College of Virginia/Virginia Commonwealth University in 1984. Following Graduate school Dr. Nelson continued his research in the neurophysiology of eye movement as a research associate at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He returned to his home state in 1989 as faculty at the College of St. Scholastic where he currently teaches neuroscience, anatomy and kinesiology and biomechanics in the physical therapy program. At St. Scholastica Dr. Nelson developed the Motor Behavior Laboratory and continued his research in the area of neurobiology of eye/head movement and balance control. Recently his research interests have shifted to the neurobiology of brain inflammation and how it affects behavior. |

Jena Ogston, PhD, PT: Associate Professor in PT; Instructor of Kinesiology/Biomechanics Jena Ogston received her Master's of Physical Therapy degree from Mayo Medical Center's School of Health Related Sciences in 1996. She then worked as a clinician in a sports medicine setting for 7 years prior to accepting a full-time position in the College of St. Scholastica's Physical Therapy program in 2002. She completed her PhD in Rehabilitation Sciences at the University of Minnesota where her focus of study had been on the biomechanics of the shoulder. Her focus of teaching is in Biomechanics, Interventions, and Critical Inquiry. She has had numerous opportunities to be involved in her community as a Physical Therapist noting her work and travels with the U.S. Nordic Ski team from 1998-2004 and several volunteer experiences with sports events locally. Jena is a member of the American Physical Therapy Association, MN APTA Research Committee, and the Mayo Clinic Physical Therapy Alumni Association. In 2007, Jena was inducted into the Academy of Advanced Item Writers through the FSBPT (Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy). |

She completed her MS in Applied Physiology and Kinesiology with an Emphasis in Athletic Training at the University of Florida and her BS in Athletic Training from UW LaCrosse. |

Karen Swanson, PhD, ATR, ATC, PT: Asst. Professor of PT; Instructor of Kinesiology/Biomechanics Karen serves the department as an adjunct instructor. She joined The College of St. Scholastica in August 2008 as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Physical Therapy. She has extensive experience with previous appointments as an instructor at University of Minnesota Duluth (2007-2008), physical therapist in multiple locations throughout the Twin Cities (1994-2002), Head Athletic Trainer at University of Minnesota (1992-94), and Head Athletic Trainer at Florida State University (1987-1989). Karen completed her PhD in Kinesiology with emphases in Biomechanics and Neural Control at University of Minnesota Twin Cities in 2009, her MPT at the Mayo School of Health Related Sciences in 1991, her Master of Arts at University of Minnesota in 1985, and her Bachelor of Science, also at UM Twin Cities, in 1983. She has a number of peer reviewed publications and presentations. Ms. Swanson is credentialed to practice both Athletic Training and Physical Therapy in Minnesota. |

Maren Barootian, MS, ATR, ATC: Assistant Athletic Trainer at CSS Maren joined The College of St. Scholastica in August 2008 as an Assistant Athletic Trainer after serving as an Athletic Training Fellow at UW LaCrosse in 2007-08. She previously completed her MS in Exercise Physiology at the University of Northern Colorado in May 2007. Maren attended UW LaCrosse for her BS in Athletic Training graduating in 2005. She is a certified member of the NATA (National Athletic Trainers Association) and an American Red Cross instructor for CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer. |

Susan Hoppe, MEd, ATR, ATC: Associate Director of Sports Medicine at UMD Susan (Suz) joined The College of St. Scholastica in August 2009 as an Approved Clinical Instructor. She is an Associate Director of Sports Medicine Services at the University of Minnesota Duluth and works with Men's Ice Hockey. Suz was previously at Gardner Webb in Boiling Springs, NC. She has an MEd from Valdosta State University in Valdosta, GA and a BS in Kinesiology from UW Eau Claire. She is currently working towards her Doctorate degree in Education at the University of Minnesota Duluth. |

David Kroll, MAEd, LAT, ATC: Head Athletic Trainer at UW Superior Dave joined The College of St. Scholastica in August 2009 as an Approved Clinical Instructor. He is the Head Athletic Trainer and an Assistant Professor at UW Superior, a position he has held since 1989. Dave was previously Director of Athletic Training at St. Paul's School in Concord, New Hampshire. He received his MAEd from East Carolina University and his BA in Physical Education from Carthage College (WI). He is active professionally serving the WATA as Member at-Large as well as chairing the Honors and Awards and Scholarship Committees. Dave is a AED/CPR/First Aid instructor for the American Red Cross, has served as a volunteer for the USOC, been a medical director for the Badger State Games, and USA Hockey and Basketball Junior Nationals. |

Kim Moncel, MS, ATR, ATC: Head Athletic Trainer at CSS Kim officially joined The College of St. Scholastica in July 2008 as Head Athletic Trainer. She had previously served the college since 1997 through a contract with SMDC. Prior to that she served Northwestern (WI) and Superior (WI) high schools through her affiliation with SMDC. Before joining SMDC, Kim was employed by Superior Acceleration and Physical Therapy (1994-96) and Central College in Pella, IA as Head Athletic Trainer/Adjunct Instructor (1993-94). She received her MS in Exercise Science from Northern Michigan University in Marquette, MI in 1993 and her BS in Physical Education/Athletic Training from Washburn University in 1991. She has served USA Baseball since 2006 as Athletic Trainer for the Women’s National Team. |

Mike Wendinger, MA, ATR, ATC, CSCS: Director of Sports Medicine at UMD Mike joined The College of St.Scholastica in August 2009 as an Approved Clinical Instructor. He serves as the Director of Sports Medicine Services and Athletic Trainer for football and tennis at the University of Minnesota Duluth. In his role as Director for Sports Medicine Services he oversees all athletic training and strength and conditioning services, a role he has held since July 2004. He has taught a variety of courses in the Health, Physical Education, and Recreation Dept. at UMD since 1999 and assisted in getting the athletic training education program accredited. He also served as an intern with the New Orleans Saints. Mike has an MA in Physical Education with an Athletic Training Concentration from Western Michigan University and a BA in Exercise Science with an Athletic Training Concentration from University of Minnesota Duluth. Mike has memberships with the NATA, GLATA, MATA, and NSCA. |
