Health Information Management
What is your field of expertise, and what makes you interested in this field?
Health Information Management! What another exciting year it has been for the HIM Profession! The healthcare industry is being transformed by health information technologies and mandates (meaningful use, interoperability, healthcare reform) and the HIIM Department at CSS is not taking this exciting time for granted.
Can you briefly introduce the academic program (or department) you are in to our prospective students?
A degree in Health Information Management provides students with the professional knowledge necessary to assume management responsibility for health record and health information systems in a variety of health related settings. It is ideal for the person who likes the health care environment but does not want direct patient contact.
The HIIM Department is at the forefront of educating and training the next generation of HIM professionals to be prepared to effectively utilize the tools and resources necessary to meet the needs of their future workplaces.
What distinguishes St. Scholastica/your program from other colleges and universities?
The College of St. Scholastica was the first college in the nation to grant a bachelor's degree in this professional field. Our program has been accredited for over 50 years and is considered one of the premier programs in the nation. The department is quickly expanding to meet the needs of the changing profession. The HIIM program also provides an Online Undergraduate, Online Graduate, Dual Graduate in HIM and Information Technology Leadership and Graduate Level Certificates Programs.
What do you like best about St. Scholastica?
The College instills its Mission and Benedictine Values throughout the CSS Community (Community, Hospitality, Respect, Stewardship and Love of Learning) which encompasses passionate and talented individuals who truly care about the future of our students.
What's your advice for prospective students?
Never let your fears put a limit on your possibilities.
"The future depends on what we do in the present."
