A foundation in Ojibwe language, culture and teaching strategies

The Ojibwe Language and Culture Education (OLCE) major prepares students to become proficient learners of the Ojibwe language, to establish a solid foundation in Ojibwe culture, traditions and history and to understand effective teaching strategies and curriculum materials for working with American Indian children. The OLCE major is not a teacher licensure program but may be combined with our Elementary Education or Middle/Secondary Education licensure programs.

The OLCE major is primarily designed for students in the Native Teacher Program (NTP), but is available to other students as well. There is no tribal membership requirement to be accepted to the program. Tuition support is available for students who major in both the NTP  and elementary or secondary education.

Learning to meet the needs of a diverse society

The OLCE major can be taken in conjunction with the Elementary Education or Middle/Secondary Education program to gain understanding in the educational needs of the American Indian Learner.

The Ojibwe Language and Culture Education major is a bachelor of arts degree program.

Accreditation

CAEP logo

The Teacher Education program at the College of St. Scholastica is accredited by both the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) and the Teacher Education Accreditation Council (TEAC) for a period of 7 years, from October 2013 to October 2020. This accreditation includes the following sites: Duluth, Brainerd, St. Paul, St. Cloud, and Rochester, Minnesota. The accreditation does not include individual education courses that the Educator Preparation Program offers to P-12 educators for professional development, re-licensure, or other purposes.

Minnesota Board of Teaching Approval (BOT)

The fully accredited Teacher Education Program is assessed according to the requirements and standards of the Minnesota Board of Teaching (BOT). The teacher education program has full continuing approval through June 30, 2019.
