English majors at CSS enjoy close contact with faculty and peers in dynamic, discussion-based courses with lively, engaging teachers. The Program allows students to pursue a course of study that both fits their interests and helps them achieve their career goals. .

English majors can earn a traditional B.A. or a B.A. with teaching licensure. Graduates can find employment in such exciting career fields as business, law, public relations, advertising, journalism, education, writing and publishing. Graduates of the program have also gone on to pursue graduate study in a variety of disciplines at distinguished institutions across the country.

Program Outcomes

Students who major in English at CSS can pursue their own interests, participate in multiple opportunities to professionalize, gain valuable skills for the workplace, and learn to analyze and manage information in an increasingly information-driven marketplace. Specifically, program outcomes are designed to assure that graduates of the program will be prepared to:

  • Analyze, evaluate, and place in context literary works
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the conventions of genres
  • Demonstrate ability to understand texts from a variety of perspectives
  • Uses language in creative ways to explore self and the human condition
  •  Demonstrate ability in writing to show due regard for audience and form
  • Articulate understanding of the impact literary study has on her/his personal/professional life
  • Demonstrate knowledge of grammar and mechanics and of the conventions of Standard English

Formats and Locations

The B.A. English degree is offered in a traditional, on-campus format at our main Duluth campus.
