What degrees are offered for Music Majors?

  • Music Performance- specializing in performance (with a pedagogy option)
  • Music Literature - specializing in music history and literature
  • Music Education - meeting state licensure requirements for teaching music in elementary and secondary schools
  • Music Management - gaining business skills to apply in music industries

*In all these areas students choose a major instrument or voice on which to specialize. A special option available at St. Scholastica is the opportunity to major in historical instruments or voice; instruments are available for students use.

All music majors take courses in:

  • Music Theory (harmony, analysis, arranging, keyboard, sight singing, ear training)
  • Music History (Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and Modern Eras)
  • Applied Music (private lessons on your major instrument or voice)
  • Ensembles (choir, band, woodwind quintet, string quartet, Abbey Minstrels, string orchestra, flute ensemble, viol consort, clarinet quartet, saxophone quartet, jazz ensemble, recorder consort)

Requirements for admission to music major:
1. Junior-level standing

2.      a. For music performance, music education and music management students: admission to 3000 level of music lessons, completion of MUS 2297 Sophomore Recital, and completion of MUS 2298 Keyboard/Sightsinging Proficiency.
          b. For music literature students: 2 semesters of music lessons on the major instrument/voice

3. Cumulative GPA of 2.0 (on a 4.0 scale) Retention requirements: Students must earn a minimum of C- in all courses required for the major and remain in good academic standing with the College to maintain status as a Music major.

You may minor in music at St. Scholastica by taking courses in Music Theory and History, studying privately and playing in ensembles.
