Mission Statement
The Department of Languages and International Studies is an interdisciplinary program which invites students to investigate individual and community roles and responsibilities in social processes that continuously transform the world.
Our program is grounded in the conviction that language and culture are inherently linked and that language study forms an important part of attaining cultural competence. Our programs of study explore issues such as human rights, globalization, power, and social justice through the study of language, the arts, and social sciences intentionally combining theory with practice.
We offer a vibrant, interactive, and intercultural space to learn both in and outside the classroom through language-based study abroad; community and service based internships; collaboration among domestic and international students; and student-organized events concerned with social justice.
A broad range of students will find a place in this program from those with a clear interest in the language and culture of a specific region of the world to those interested in issues related to culture, power, or identity with the ultimate aim of promoting peace through deeper cultural understanding.
