Dr. John Schifsky is a Professor of English. He received his B.A. from St. John's University in Collegeville, his M.A. from the University of Minnesota and his Ph.D. from the University of Iowa. John's areas of interest are classical rhetorical theory, stylistics and composition.
He teaches writing courses including Stylistics, Management Communications: Written, and Technical Writing. In addition he teaches 18th and 19th century American literature, the American Short Story survey as well as courses in fantasy literature and the literature of war. He received the Sears Roebuck Foundation Teaching Excellence and Campus Leadership Award in 1990 and the Max H. Lavine Award for Teaching Excellence in 2007. He has been teaching at St. Scholastica since 1969.
John is interested in working with both elementary and secondary teachers of Language Arts and has co-directed seven humanities summer institutes for teachers from Minnesota and the Upper Midwest. A principal aim of the institutes has been to encourage and nurture interest in literature on the part of teachers. At present he is working on a narrative detailing minor seminary experience. John is currently the department's Rose Warner Professor.
