Area of specialty & academic interests and/or research interests- For my dissertation I conducted qualitative historical-cultural research on the evolution of sportscast highlights as an aesthetic form for broadcasting. A paper related to this research, titled "Evolution of the Sportscast Highlight Culture: From Peep Show to Pathé to Pastiche," was named runner-up for the 2007 Barbara A. Brown Student Paper Award at the North American Society for the Sociology of Sport (NASSS) conference. Another paper, "Sport as Cultural Assimilation: Representations of Indian Athletes in Carlisle Indian Industrial School Newspapers," received an Honorable Mention for Best Student Paper at the American Journalism Historians Association (AJHA) conference in October 2007 and has been accepted for publication in American Journalism (May 2009). In addition to journalism history, other areas of interest include mass communication theory and new media/convergence. My areas of specialty include Journalism and Mass Communication History; Sport Journalism and Sport Journalism History; Sport History and the Sociology of Sport. I have presented papers at the American Journalism Historians Association conference, the North American Society for Sport History conference, the North American Society for the Sociology of Sport conference and the International Ski History Congress.
Teaching/research experience: I have nineteen years of higher education teaching experience. Courses I teach at CSS include Mass Communication, News Writing and Reporting, Public Speaking, Media, Sport & Culture, Writing for the Mass Media, Advanced Journalism, History of the Press, Online Journalism, Public Speaking and Human Communication.
Personal interests include hiking, Nordic and alpine skiing, canoeing the Boundary Waters, biking, golf, tennis, and cooking.
