Jen received her undergraduate degree in communication and Spanish from the University of Minnesota Duluth in 2002. She spent three years with an advertising, marketing and public relations agency group - Flint group - two years in the Duluth office, Westmoreland Flint. Jen completed her MA in communication (emphasis in risk+crisis, public relations, and organizational communication) in 2007 from North Dakota State University and will receive her Ph.D. from NDSU in fall 2009. While at NDSU Jen was a member of the risk+crisis communication team funded most notably by the National Center for Food Protection and Defense. For the past two years Jen has worked as an instructor in the Department of Communication at the University of Minnesota Duluth while maintaining full-time status as a doctoral student.
Jen's research is varied, but focuses mainly on finding ways to effectively communicate about risk and at the various stages of crisis. More specifically, she aims to understand organizational implications of risk and crisis communication as well as implications of risk and crisis communication for non-dominant or minority populations. A second line of research centers around work-family tensions and organizational efforts and programs aimed to mitigate these tensions. See curriculum vitae for published works.
Jen has taught public speaking, interpersonal communication, public relations, and risk communication. In addition, she teaches advertising, intercultural communication, and human communication at CSS.
When Jen has free time, she enjoys spending time with son (Hayden, 1 yr.) and husband (Andy) at family cabin(s), on the Lakewalk, playing, or hiking. She also loves to read (not necessarily the classics - admittedly spent winter break reading the Twilight series) and enjoys the outdoors and exercise. She is grateful for the opportunity to make a home and a career in Duluth.
