The Art Major

We are constantly surrounded by visual stimuli, but we rarely take time to reflect on them or participate in their creation. Art courses offer a chance to do both. If, as Abbe Dubes claims, "The first purpose of art is to touch us," a study of visual principles and the cultural and historical contexts for art production can deepen our responses and strengthen our ability to connect with others through original creations.

Art is a means of problem solving, a way of knowing, a unique form of communication, one of the ways in which human beings are distinct from other species.  Art can be a powerful means of creating empathy and communicating truth.  The art major prepares the student to develop a clear personal expression as a visual artist in a chosen medium.   Students will also demonstrate technical skill and the ability to evaluate and critique their own work as well as the work of other artists.

The Art Minor

An Art minor was designed to serve two populations- those who want to earn the minor simply because they enjoy creativity, and those who may benefit by combining it with a major. Creativity is an intangible skill that can serve professionals well once out in their intended fields.

Communication majors who desire more exploration of courses beyond their Visual Studies track (photography, film, video) might want to consider additional exploration of art history, theory and techniques.

Languages and Literature majors could also benefit from an Art minor, since it would serve as a visual parallel to intensive study of the great literary works. It would also complement foreign language study and offer yet another vehicle to expand cross-cultural understanding.

Students in health-related fields may also want to consider an Art minor. Occupational Therapists already use various artistic methods (i.e., painting and drawing) to help their clients master certain physical skills. An Art minor would provide these majors with additional artistic skills and knowledge.

The above list is by no means exhaustive. These are just some of the many combinations possible with the Art minor and other major fields of study available at St. Scholastica.
