Name:
Heather Bastian Ph.D.
Title:
Asst. Professor
Department:
English
What is your field of expertise, and what makes you interested in this field?
My field is Composition and Rhetoric, and I specialize in rhetorical genre theory, composition pedagogy, and writing programs. I've been interesting in writing since my undergraduate years as an English major and writing associate at Lafayette College. Writing and rhetoric have tremendous power to create, influence, and reinforce our perceptions and understanding of others and the world around us-for good and for ill. As such, I am committed to providing students with the knowledge and power to use writing responsibly and deliberately.
Can you briefly introduce the academic program (or department) you are in to our prospective students?
The English Department at St. Scholastica is an especially lively and diverse group of committed educators and intellectuals. Our interests range from literature to poetry to drama to composition and rhetoric.
What do you like best about St. Scholastica?
The students. They are genuinely interested in and committed to learning and developing as students and individuals.
What's your advice for prospective students?
Go to your professors' office hours (or make an appointment) and just talk to them. Establishing open lines of communication and developing professional relationships are two of the best avenues for success in college and beyond.
