Print indexes in the CSS Library

The following is a list of print indexes available in the CSS Library. Online databases on our Find Articles page serve the same function as a print index. However, many of these databases only index journals and magazines from approximately 1980 to the present. Print indexes are valuable in offering access to older citations, the focus of the journals indexed, and the quality of the subject headings.

Print indexes are shelved on both the first and second floor of the Library. Please ask for assistance if needed.

Abstracts in Social Gerontology
1990 - present. Mostly journal articles on gerontology; some books and book chapters.

Bibliography of Bioethics
1975 - present. Comprehensive coverage, including journal and magazine articles, books, and even individual book chapters.

Book Review Digest
1916 -2002. Includes paragraph long reviews excerpted from various periodicals.

Business Periodicals Index
1978 - 1998. Business and management magazines and journals. Scholarly, professional and popular journals. Continued by Business Source Premier.

Catholic Periodical and Literature Index
1933 - present. Thorough coverage of Catholic magazines and journals. Available online at Catholic Periodical and Literature Index.

CINAHL (Cumulative Index to Nursing & Allied Health)
1956 - date. Premiere index for nursing, physical therapy, occupational therapy & exercise physiology journals. Available online from 1982 - present in CINAHL with Full-Text.

Communication Abstracts
1978 - present. Scholarly journals on communication and media issues. Available online at Communication and Mass Media Complete.

Current Literature on Aging
1983 - 1989, continued by: Abstracts in Social Gerontology, 1990-present. Mostly journal articles on gerontology; some books and book chapters.

Duluth News-Tribune Index
1988 - 1996. Indexes most articles in the Duluth News-Tribune. Due to the labor intensiveness of the work, the Duluth Public Library has ceased indexing the DNT.  Full text of the Duluth News Tribune from November 1995 to the present is available on our Duluth News-Tribune page.

Education Index
1929/30 - June, 1997. Education as well as many children's issues. Scholarly and professional journals. Continued by Wilson Education Index.

Hospital Literature Index
V39 - 50. Continued by: Hospital & Health Administation Index.

Hospital & Health Administration Index
1995 - 1999. Health administration is now a subset of (jsubseth) of PubMed.

Humanities Index
1975 - present. Literature, history, religion, music and art. Scholarly journals.

International Index to Periodicals
1931 - 1965. Continued by: Social Sciences & Humanities Index.

International Nursing Index
1966 - 1997. Especially good for community and public health nursing. Both scholarly and professional journals.

Library Literature
1961 - 2002. Continued by: Library Literature & Information Science.

MLA International Bibliography of Books and Articles on Modern Language and Literature
1969 - date (shelved in Ref. PN 80 .M64). Scholarly articles. Arrangement is first by country (American literature), then by time period (1900s), then author (Hemingway), then work (The Sun Also Rises). MLA is now available online.

PAIS: Public Affairs Information Service
1973 - 1997 . Anything government would be interested in: economics, social services, law, education, etc.; includes much on foreign topics and cross- national issues. Journals as well as books and government publications.

Philosopher's Index
1967 - present (located at the Index Table). Both books and periodical articles; quite scholarly; abstracts included.

Poole's Index to Periodical Literature
1802 - 1881. An important source for historical information in 19th century American and English periodicals on all subjects.

Popular Periodical Index
1974 - 1978.

Reader's Guide to Periodical Literature
1905 - present. All topics written about in general-audience magazines. Few scholarly articles.

Religion Index One
1977 - present. Serious technical and scholarly (and international) journal articles on religion, bible studies, etc. Thorough Protestant coverage, with Catholic and Jewish literature as well.

Social Sciences & Humanites Index
1965 - 1974. Splits, and continues as Social Sciences Index and Humanities Index.

Social Sciences Index
1975 - present. Psychology, economics, social work, and social issues (women's studies). Scholarly journals.
