Use our LibGuide "Subject Encyclopedias in the CSS Reference Collection" for a list of print & electronic encyclopedias organized by topic.

For the purposes of this list, subject encyclopedias will be categorized as scholary works in which the majority of the individual articles contain a bibliography of additional sources.

Reference Universe


Reference Universe searches the table of contents and indexes of recent print and electronic works in the CSS Reference Collection (those works published in the last 10 to 15 years). It is possible in some cases to browse the table of contents of an encyclopedia in this list by using Reference Universe. Use this database to find concise, authoritative information from print sources in the library. Direct links to the full-text of electronic titles are available if the work is owned by the library.

To browse the table of contents of a particular work:
a.  Copy and paste a title from this list into the search box of Reference Universe and click on search.

b.  From the title information in your search results, click on "About this work."

c.  Click on either "view articles titles for this work" or "view index from this work."

Encyclopedia of Social Work, 21st edition

Electronic access to the full-text of over 20 print encyclopedias from Gale & its imprints.

Sage Reference Collection
Electronic access to the full-text of 40 reference title published by Sage.

Reference Universe
This database searches the title of articles and the indexes of print and electronic reference books, such as almanacs, dictionaries, and specialized encyclopedias. The search can be limited to those reference works which are owned by the CSS Library. Use this database to find concise, authoritative information from print sources in the library. Direct links to the full-text of electronic titles are available if the work is owned by the library.

Use the CSS Library's citation guides to cite a subject encyclopedia article in either MLA or APA format.
