Functional Independence Measure

The FIM^TM* (Guide for the Uniform Data Set for Medical Rehabilitation, 1996) is the most widely accepted functional assessment measure in use in the rehabilitation community. The FIM(TM) is an 18-item ordinal scale, used with all diagnoses within a rehabilitation population. It is viewed as most useful for assessment of progress during inpatient rehabilitation.

Joint Commission Core Measure Set
2009 core measure and measure set implementation timelines have been established for the Joint Commission's ORYX® initiative. ALL but ONE core measure (that is, pregnancy and related conditions) of the JC's measure sets are Hospital Quality Measures, which the JC has in common with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and are endorsed by the National Quality Forum (NQF) and used for the Hospital Quality Alliance (HQA) initiative. This facilitates data collection and reporting.

Nursing - Sensitive Quality Indicators

Nursing-Sensitive Quality Indicators are those indicators that capture care or its outcomes most affected by nursing care. As the American Nurses' Association and State Nursing Associationscompile research data on nursing-sensitive quality indicators, the indicators continue to be amplified from the original seven conceptualized in 1995. And, as more research is gathered and the indicators will continue to be tested and alterations may occur.

ORYX requirements - 2008

Beginning January 1, 2008, Joint Commission accredited hospitals will be required to collect and submit ORYX core measure or core measure set data for four core measure sets.

• If four applicable core measure sets can be identified, then no non-core measures are required.
• If three applicable core measure sets can be identified, then three non-core measures are required.
• If two applicable core measure sets can be identified, then six non-core measures are required.
• If one applicable core measure set can be identified, then nine non-core measures are required.
• If no core measure sets are applicable, then nine non-core measures are required.
• The Joint Commission is capping the non-core measure requirement at nine measures through 2009.
