Graduate Management Courses for HIM and Nursing Programs
The courses listed below are especially designed for graduate students in the Health Information Management and/or Nursing programs. Others may register only with permission of instructor. There are no prerequisites for nursing students; however it is highly recommended that MGT 6412 be taken within the first 16 credits of graduate study.
MGT 6350: Organizational Behavior (HIM)
3 credits
The course utilizes lectures, in-class experiences and reading to explore the interaction between individuals and the organizations in which they work. Topics include individual motivation and learning styles, group management, leadership, decision-making, team management power, conflict and their ethical implications.
MGT 6412: Management Writing & Resources
3 credits
Provides students an opportunity to develop and practice their writing skills for graduate coursework. Differences between academic and business writing are examined in terms of audience, purpose, format, and demands. Course includes examples of good academic writing and previews the final project and final project proposal for the MA in Management.
MGT 6413: Management Communication
3 credits
Prepares students to direct, control and develop employees through the use of effective interpersonal communication. Incorporates theory with practice and provides students opportunities to develop the skills necessary to accomplish work through the efforts of others (i.e., manage).
MGT 6420 / NSG 8420: Organizational Behavior
3 credits
Explores the behavior of people within organizations in terms of the factors that most influence it. Those include factors related to individuals, groups, and the larger organization system. The course utilizes an experiential learning process that helps students understand their strengths and weaknesses as learners.
MGT 6430: Organization Development
3 credits
Explores how organizations learn to better utilize their internal resources for the purpose of improving their services and/or products. Also known as "Planned Change," Organization Development exposes students to a variety of theoretical models explaining how and why organizations change, and provides opportunities for students to develop and practice the skills necessary for change management.
MGT 6440: Financial Management
3 credits
Covers a wide variety of financial topics that are required tools for managers and officers of both large and small organizations. Covers the topics of value tracking and capital budgeting as well as financial decision-making within dynamic organizations. A previous course in accounting is recommended but not required.
MGT 6445: Human Resource Management
3 credits
Explores how decisions about human resources (HR) contribute to an organization's overall effectiveness. Integrates HR activities with the organization's strategic planning objectives. Students study both traditional and contemporary HR issues from a practitioner's perspective.
MGT 6450: Marketing
3 credits
Serves as an introduction to marketing management. Integrates theory and practice in activities that emphasize student applications of course lessons to their own organizations.
MGT 6455: Strategic Management
3 credits
Introduces students to the theory and practice of strategic management, including its phases of planning, implementation and evaluation. Serves as a capstone course in the Master of Arts in Management Program that requires the integration of information and skills derived from previous coursework. The drivers of organizational change, dynamic nature of strategic thinking, and "big picture" systems perspective for implementation are emphasized over merely long-term planning.
MGT 6550: Financial Management (HIM)
2 credits
This course is a survey course in financial management. The theory of finance is studied with an emphasis on application of theory within the firm. Students use business calculators and Excel spreadsheets to apply theory in solving problems. Case analysis is used to emphasize the relationship of financial theory and the firm.
MGT 6750: Strategic Management (HIM)
3 credits
In a world characterized by change and uncertainty, managers must learn to plan strategically and adapt when necessary. This course covers organizational design, the analysis of internal and external environments, policy and planning. The potential for conflict between strategy and ethics will be considered.
