HIM 2101 Medical Language

The study of terminology common tomedicine;utilizing word elements as a basis for building medical terms and analyzingmeanings;defining,pronouncing, and spelling commonly used medical terms; conversion of layman's terms to appropriate medical terminology. In addition, terminology of specific medical allied health specialties (surgery, dentistry, radiology, etc.) and abbreviations are reviewed.Prerequisites: concurrent registration in BIO 2110 or prior anatomy/ physiology course(s) and HIM 2102.

HIM 2102 Introduction of Pharmacotherepeutics
1 cr.
An introduction to the variety of drugs used for disease treatment for each body system. A general understanding of howdrugswork, their potentials and limitations, as well as their diversity and number will be explored. Prerequisite: concurrent registration in BIO 2110 or prior anatomy/physiology course(s).

HIM 2112 Fundamentals of Health InformationManagement
4 cr.
Overview of the National Health Information Infrastructure, its component parts as they apply to the electronic patient record, the field of health information management, professional roles within the field, professional organizations and the professional Code of Ethics; the content and structure of manual, computerized and hybrid health record and the standards that govern the development of the record within a health care facility;creation ofmedical documents and e-forms. Prerequisites: HIM 2101 & 2102 or permission of department.

HIM 3132 Medicolegal Issues
4 cr.
Study of the U.S. judicial system; hospital,medical staff and other professional liability; health information as evidence; consent for treatment; retention and release of medical information; the health record as a legal document; risk management, prevention and potential; confidentiality of health information; and a patient's right to know. Prerequisite: HIM 2112 or permission of instructor.

HIM 3211 Classification of Clinical Data
4 cr.
Introduction to classification systems utilized in collecting, maintaining and retrieving specified clinical data in a variety of healthcare settings. Emphasis on ICD-9-CM coding of data by manual or computer methods; relationship of coding to reimbursement; specialized and emerging classifications and nomenclatures. Prerequisite: HIM 2101, HIM 2112 and BIO 3020.

HIM 3311 Managing Human Resources
4 cr.
Overview of quality management principles; supervisory management related specifically to managing health information services;employee selection, training and development; labor relations and employee relations; managing difficult employees and implementing disciplinary policies;employee performance; evaluation and compensation. Prerequisite: HIM 2112 or permission of instructor.

HIM 4222 Clinical DataManagement
3 cr.
Managing the coding function in healthcare organizations; uniform data sets and healthcare informatics standards for health data collection;evaluation of data quality; DRGs and other case mix systems; revenue cycle management; data collection for enterprise; reportable and specialized databases; data mining of healthcare data. Prerequisite: HIM 3211 or permission of instructor.

HIM 4231 Clinical QualityManagement
4 cr.
Techniques for calculating meaningful clinical, administrative, vital, and public health statistics for internal and external use; medical staff organization and function; medical staff and hospitalmonitoring and evaluation of patient care; clinical information analysis and use; planning, organizing and evaluating integrated quality improvement activities; clinical pathways, case management, utilization management, risk management and performance improvement processes. Prerequisites: BIO 3020, HIM 2112 or permission of instructor.

HIM 4232 Ambulatory Reimbursement Systems
1 cr.
Coding hospital outpatient and physician office records using the CPT/HCPCS coding system; reimbursement issues related to ambulatory/outpatient coding; reimbursement systems including RBRVS,APCs and other pertinent systems. Prerequisite: HIM3211 or permission of instructor.

HIM 4315 Management Tools and Strategies
4 cr.
Problem solving and decision making techniques; planning and organizing; establishing performance and production monitors; tools and techniques for process improvement; controlling; principles of layout and design; financialmanagement concepts essential formanaging HIM department operations; the healthcare financial environment; financial statements, and accounts receivable management; capital and operational budgeting. Prerequisite: HIM3311 or permission of instructor.

HIM 4411 HIS Strategies and Applications
2 cr.
Introduction to systems development lifecycle; principles of information systems development; user involvement in application design and implementation; review and assessment of existing and emerging health care information systems applications. Prerequisites: HSC 2203, CIS 3105 or permission of instructor.

HIM 4421 Alternative Health Record Systems
2 cr.
Health record content and format; regulatory and accreditation requirements; storage and retention needs; privacy and security requirements; computerized information systems; classification systems; reimbursement and compliance issues; data collection/ reporting and quality issues in alternative (usually nonhospital) healthcare settings. Prerequisite: HIM 2112.

HIM 4530 Progression ProgramClinical Visits

Clinical Visits is a component of professional practice experience for Progression students. Students visit and/or have practice experience in specialty or unique non-hospital health care facilities or agencies. Prerequisite: Permission of HIM Department.

HIM 4540 Progression Program Administrative Project

Administrative Project is a component of professional practice that focuses on an approved practice-related project done under the direction of an on-sitementor. Prerequisite: Permission of HIM Department.

HIM 4550 Progression ProgramAffiliation
2 cr.
Management Affiliation is a component of the Progression Programinternship and is supervised professional practice focused on managerial experiences in health information departments of hospitals,medical centers and alternative health care facilities across the country. Prerequisite: Permission of HIM Department.

HIM 4555 Professional Practice Placement (Internship)
8 cr.
The Senior Seminar course is a student-centered experience revolving around internship experiences. Students discuss professional practice placement experiences; share learning experiences and present internship experiences and projects. In addition, it includes employment readiness opportunities, explores employment opportunities and career preparation. Interaction with other HIM professionals in unique career settings and preparation for the credentialing examination help prepare the student to begin life as a professional. Prerequisite: Senior standing and permission of HIM Department.

HIM 4556 Seminar in Health Information Management
2 cr.
The Senior Seminar course is a student-centered experience revolving around internship experiences. Students discuss professional practice placement experiences; share learning experiences and present internship experiences and projects. In addition, it includes employment readiness opportunities, explores employment opportunities and career preparation.
