Distance learners are people who, because of time, geographic or other constraints, choose not to attend traditional classrooms. They have a wide variety of backgrounds and ages. They turn to distance learning largely for convenience.

Below are some reasons why students have taken online courses:

- Spend more time with families
Taking an online course also requires a certain level of computer literacy. To be successful taking a St. Scholastica online course, you should at least be comfortable performing the following:
- Connecting to the Internet from your personal computer via an Internet Service Provider (i.e. modem or dsl)
- Using MS Word to create and save documents
- Using your computer's operating system to create files, move documents, backup files to floppy disk or cd rom
- Using the World Wide Web for research and to access College resources (i.e. Library, Bookstore, Registrar) and browsing other web sites
Using e-mail to communicate with your faculty, fellow students, and to send in your homework as an attachment
