AWARDS!! December 2008: The College of St. Scholastica's ATHENS Project (Advancing Technology in Healthcare Education Now at St. Scholastica) received the Health Data Management Editor's Choice Award: "IT Innovator of the Year". On behalf of all of the health professions' faculty at the College, Shirley Eichenwald Maki, MBA, RHIA, FAHIMA (ATHENS Project Director) and Janelle Wapola, MA, RHIA (ATHENS Project Technology Lead) jointly accepted the award at its presentation during the World Health Innovation and Technology Congress (WHIT v4.0) in Washington, DC. The Academic EHR developed through The ATHENS Project effort is now available to other colleges/universities in the form of an AEHR Subscription Service offered through the Center for Healthcare Innovation at the College of St. Scholastica. December 2008: Mary Witrak, Ph.D., RN, Dean of the School of Nursing, accepted an award at the AACN Fall 08 Conference in Washington, D.C.: A 2008 'Innovations in Professional Nursing Education' Award to The College of St. Scholastica in the small schools category: College of St. Scholastica's innovation is a curriculum project (The ATHENS Project) to increase the decision-making and practice competence of graduates by providing them with the tools to electronically access patient data and best practices guidelines at the point-of-care. The ATHENS Projectis a 5-year initiative (2002-2007) - a first in the nation - focused on phasing in the integration of hands-on experiences with state-of-the-art, computer-based clinical information system applications into the curricula of thehealth sciencesprofessional programs at the College of St. Scholastica. This innovative educational project is funded by a 1.8M Title III grant from the U.S. Department of Education and is being implemented through a partnership with Cerner Corporation based on an Application Service Provider (ASP) model.
