People in need are welcome to attend “Thanksgiving in the Spring,” a community meal planned and hosted by students at The College of St. Scholastica. The meal will be served from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 27, in the Greenview Dining Room on the St. Scholastica campus.

Dinner will include baked chicken with sage dressing, mashed potatoes, vegetables, rolls and dessert. A play area for children will feature games and other activities. Approximately 400 diners are expected.

Free buses to St. Scholastica will run from CHUM, the Damiano Center, Union Gospel Mission and the Salvation Army in both Duluth and Superior. Bus schedules are available at each site.

Organizers expect to deliver nearly 400 meals to homebound residents in Duluth.

“Thanksgiving in the Spring” is part of Community Day at St. Scholastica, and complements the Thanksgiving Buffet in November sponsored by St. Scholastica and the Twin Ports community.

The event is being planned, prepared and staffed by St. Scholastica freshmen who are part of the Dignitas first-year program at the College. Dignitas students also raised donations to help pay for the event by soliciting area businesses.

“All of us here at St. Scholastica, whether students, faculty or staff, are in a position of privilege,” said Pat Hagen, a St. Scholastica English professor who leads Dignitas, “and it’s very nice to care for people who haven’t had the advantages we’ve had, to give something back to the community.”

Two other outreach efforts will be featured during St. Scholastica’s Community Day. ]

About 100 St. Scholastica students will leave campus at 7 a.m. from the Mitchell Auditorium parking lot to participate in a lobbying effort in support of the State Grant program, which benefits disadvantaged college students at public and private colleges and universities across the state. They will return at 4 p.m.

About 90 students will do volunteer work at sites throughout Duluth, including delivering meals and doing work at The Salvation Army, CHUM Food Shelf and Drop In Center, the Damiano Center, Chris Jensen nursing home, the Benedictine Health Center, the Union Gospel Mission, and Second Harvest.

STUDENTS WILL LEAVE FOR THE CAPITOL AT 7 A.M. IN THE MITCHELL AUDITORIUM PARKING LOT AND RETURN AT 4 P.M.

STUDENTS WILL PREPARE FOR HOME DELIVERY OF MEALS AT 8:45 A.M., 10:45 A.M. AND 12:45 P.M. AT THE SOMERS HALL LOADING DOCK ON CAMPUS.

STUDENTS WILL SERVE THE ‘THANKSGIVING IN THE SPRING’ MEAL FROM 4 TO 7 P.M. IN GREENVIEW DINING ROOM. WE REQUEST THAT YOU RESPECT THE PRIVACY OF DINERS.
