LeAnn House will perform music by Beethoven, Chopin and Schumann at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 15, in the Mitchell Auditorium on the St. Scholastica campus. The concert is part of the College’s 2007-08 Cambiata Music Series. House, noted pianist and professor of music at St. Scholastica, will present a solo program including Beethoven’s “Sonata in C minor, Opus 111,” and Chopin’s “Ballade in F minor, Opus 52.” After intermission, violinists Penny Schwarze and Laurie Bastian, violist Ron Kari, and cellist Rebecca Peterson will join House for a performance of Schumann’s “Piano Quintet.” The Beethoven sonata, written in 1822, is the last of the composer’s 32 piano sonatas. The pieces by Chopin and Schumann were both composed in 1842 at the zenith of their compositional careers. Both would compose very little more before falling victim to ill health and premature death. “These are works that exhibit the exceptional and transcendent qualities of the composers’ late styles,” said House. "The genius of these great composers is on full display. The era was exceedingly rich for piano music, thanks to them." Tickets will be available at the door; they are $10 for adults and $5 for students age 18 and younger (or with current college ID). For advance ticket sales, call (218) 723-7000 or visit: www.css.edu/mitchell.xml.
