Highlights from a popular display of Catholic artifacts will be presented next week, free of charge, at The College of St. Scholastica.

Calling All Catholics, a student group at St. Scholastica, will sponsor a selection of items from "The Vatican Comes to Duluth," a display of papal memorabilia that belongs to the Rev. Richard Kunst of Duluth. An exhibit of the objects was visited by thousands of people when displayed at St. Scholastica in 2004.

Kunst will introduce the display with a presentation beginning at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 8, in the Mitchell Auditorium on campus. The event celebrates Pope Benedict XVI's upcoming visit to the U.S., April 15-20. The event is free and open to the public.

Featured items include a Swiss Army Guard uniform, documents dating as far back as the 13th century, papal vestments, and other personal belongings of popes.

“This is, no doubt, the largest collection of papal memorabilia in the United States,” said Father Kunst, “if not the world. I have things the Vatican does not even have.”

Father Kunst is pastor of St. John’s Catholic Church in Duluth and St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Gnesen Township.

“This event is a wonderful opportunity to learn more about the Catholic Church and its rich history through Father Kunst’s incredible collection,” said junior Anna Altman, president of Calling All Catholics. Her organization offers "a way for students to build community with other students to learn and live out their faith."
