St. Scholastica will host a community dialogue on the topic of white privilege at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Mitchell Auditorium. The event is free and the public is welcome.
"White privilege is a difficult but important subject," said Larry Goodwin, president of St.Scholastica. "Our goal is to bring our community together to have a constructive and respectful public discussion."
Educating students who understand the dynamics of how systems of power, privilege and oppression impact communities and individuals is important to the identity of St. Scholastica and its Catholic Benedictine mission to promote social justice, said Emily Segar-Johnson, director of the College's Office of Institutional Diversity.
"The Un-Fair campaign has sparked conversations in the community, but much of the discourse has been veiled in anonymity in the on-line community," she said. "Community and respect are two of our five Benedictine values, so hosting a community dialogue promoting respectful conversation around this complex topic seemed a good fit for the College."
St. Scholastica is assembling a panel of community members with a wide range of perspectives about the issues of white privilege, and audience members who attend the session will be able to submit written questions to the panel, Segar-Johnson said.
St. Scholastica has also started a Facebook page for students to submit questions for the panelists.
