The College of St. Scholastica Instrumental Ensembles will stage a spring concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 23, in the Mitchell Auditorium on campus. There is no admission charge and the public is encouraged to attend.
The Woodwind Ensembles are under the direction of Marianne Connelly, assistant professor of music, and Shelley Gruskin, music faculty emeritus; the String Ensemble is under the direction of Penny Schwarze, professor of music.
A clarinet trio will perform "Scherzo" and "Allegretto" by Ludwig van Beethoven. A saxophone quartet will perform "Scherzo" by Hans Mielenz.
A flute trio, including Gruskin, will perform a two-movement composition by Kaspar Kummer.
The St. Scholastica String Orchestra will be joined by Gruskin, a virtuoso recorder player, in a performance of George Philipp Telemann's "Suite in A minor."
The orchestra will also perform Luigi Boccherini's "Night Music of Madrid," popularized in the film "Master and Commander," and the first movement of Antonio Vivaldi's "Concerto in G minor for Two Cellos," featuring senior Mical Blanchard-Wright and sophomore Lizi Johnson.
